I got this from a neighbor two years ago. Sorry, this is the only picture I have of it for some reason

It sure looks like it to me. I see Japanese Painted Fern (Anisocampium niponicum) in the database but to me yours looks more like Anisocampium niponicum var. pictum which isn't yet listed in the ATP database. I think the Genus used to be Athyrium but is now considered Anisocampium. Here are some photos for comparison:

Sure looks like Japanese Painted Fern to me, too. Lin, Anisocampium niponicum var. pictum is "sort of" in the database. There's a synonym for Anisocampium niponicum listed as Athyrium niponicum var. pictum . Wouldn't that be the same thing if you change the genus name?

Thank you all!

It is enough for me to just know it is Anisocampium niponicum

That's a nice, healthy looking plant. I just got one this year; hope it does as well as yours! Thumbs up

Thanks woofie! I actually have three. Two years ago they were just wee little pieces.

woffie, yes, I think they are one and the same ... someone should notify the database administrators to correct it. Maybe @zuzu could help?

I can't find Anisocampium niponicum var. pictum in any taxonomic database. Woofie's correct in pointing out the Athyrium niponicum var. pictum listed as a synonym. Some of the Athyrium species were redefined as species of the Anisocampium genus, but some of the infraspecific names were also redefined as synonyms of others. I suspect there was never any need for the Anisocampium niponicum var. pictum name because Athyrium niponicum var. pictum had already been redefined as a synonym for Athyrium niponicum. Both therefore became synonyms for Anisocampium niponicum.

Thanks for the explanation zuzu although I will have to re-read it tomorrow to comprehend it. We just arrived in San Diego and checked in at the hotel and I'm so tired from the long day that I can't even think straight. Blinking We left Daytona at 11:30 for an hour flight to Atlanta; then we had a little more than 3 hour layover in Atlanta before the flight to San Diego. Although it's only a little after 8:00 p.m. here my brain and body are on eastern time and after we get a bite to eat I'm going to bed! Green Grin!
