I have been looking for a dark red one and I chose Grand Cru. It has not disappointed me.
Grand Cru

I grow several of the brighter red ones
Red Lion

I have these rowed up in my spring garden where the huge red blooms are a show stopper.

I am waiting for my new ones to open, Star of Holland. They should be red with white.

Red Lion has been around for awhile and seems to be very popular but wow I love Grand Cru and the deep dark color of Black Pearl!

Bonnie I noticed that you are in zone 7. The ones outdoors, are they left there year round?

Yes, Lynn, I force indoors and plant them in the garden in May. They bloom the next year. Even the brutal weather we had last year did not kill any.

Bonnie thank you so much for the encouragement. Does the area they are planted in have fast draining soil?

Yes it does. It is a slope and I have noticed that plants that need a lot of moisture do no do well in that bed. I have other bulbs there, irises, creeping phlox and dianthus.

Thank you Bonnie. I think I know where I will move them to. More sun, and a spot in the front yard that the Juniper tree roots keeps rather dry. I think that will protect them from drowning in our heavy rainy season (Jan thru April/May).

Good luck, Lynn. They sure are worth the effort. I used to cut a bloom stalk and wrap the bottom in wax paper and send it by one of the children to their school teacher. The child looked like it was carrying a fancy umbrella the way the blooms flared out all around. I love them in my garden.
