Does anyone else have to grow their amaryllis as houseplants?
I'm so envious of gardeners who can grow them outdoors. My experience with them has always been as houseplants. I had my biggest collection of bulbs when I lived in Maine as I was so desperate through the long winters to have something in flower. I couldn't bring them with me when I came home. I had quite a collection a few years ago but now live in a tiny bungalow so don't have any room for them.
They are such wonderful easy plants.

I have some indoors but I have a hard time getting them to rebloom. Outdoors in the ground they bloom effortlessly and the plants never go dormant.

Yes--houseplants
with big strappy leaves, clogging up all the sunny windows, just for those irresistible blooms once a year Hilarious! to let me know that spring is right around the corner...
I suppose that I could haul them outside for the summer but I don't. I haul the bigger plants out and let the bulbs stretch their wings in the windows--where I can keep them from frying and remember to water them enough.
Mine all find their own schedule after their first year. I do have two blooming now in honor of the celebration week Hurray! and the rest will do their thing sometime between now and about the end of March.

Sue, what a marvelous collection you had! I've really enjoyed all of the photos that you have submitted.
