This was given to me as a teen, from an elderly neighbor long since passed. She had a galvanized wash tub overflowing with them- it was an amazing sight in bloom! I've never been able to id it. She blooms heavily every January , and again, less heavily in summer. This plant never goes dormant and keeps attractive foliage year round.

This pot of bulbs just finished blooming, and I've divided the bulbs. I had to break the pot, they were so tightly packed, bulbs sitting on top ofeach oother.

Neal - What a lovely bloom color and shape! I have no idea of the cultivar, but it's a very special gem given the circumstances of how you received these plants!

It is unique among Amaryllis, and has a grace unlike modern varieties. I love the green throat too. I wonder if its a species?

I was trying to think how old it must be, considering the lady who gave it to me, had inherited it from her aunt. She had inherited the house, its contents, and the land, around 1980. The previous owner was in her late 90s when she passed, and she had lots of very well established perennials, house plants, and old Dahlia varieties she had dug every year...yes, right up till the end!

I believe that tub of bulbs had to be at least 50 years of growth, and probably older.

Very impressive, indeed! Perhaps it is a species not a cultivar as you are wondering. It is beautiful, IMHO.

It does look similar, Lyn. Its been several years since I've done any more research, and I just have been looking at the Pacific Bulb Society info on species, and see a few that look to be potential matches. Hippeastrum puniceum looks to be a possibility.

http://www.pacificbulbsociety....

When these bloom in summer, they're out on the deck receiving a lot more light. The blooms at that time are much deeper in color. The blooms are about 4" across.

These pics were taken in June.

Almost lost them once, had a 12" pot full of them and they developed some kind of rot if I recall correctly. Lost the whole pot full, and thought they were gone. One day I found where a bulblet had fallen into the pot of a cane Begonia. The pot full I have now all came from that little bulblet about 6 years ago. They multiply very well, thankfully.

I agree with both statements above! Especially helping you out if you wind up with too many bulbs. LOL!

Neal I received a very old one that looks like your pic but mine is orange. The lady that gave it to my Mom had gotten it from her mother and my mother had been growing it for 40 yrs when she gave me a few bulbs so it has been in my family for over 80 yrs.

Mine blooms all year. It blooms heavy every Mother's day and off and on through the summer then it usually rest Aug - Nov and starts to bloom off and on again until the heavy bloom Mother's day.

This is it in the winter.

Cinta, that does look very close! The color of this one varies depending on lighting, and while yours does look a tad more orange, I could see them being the same species. Certainly does sound like they're from the same time period.

Margaret, it has produced seeds. I cut the stems off after the last bloom cycle to divide and re pot, but I'd be happy to save seeds this summer.

I do have some extra bulblets after dividing it. I'd be happy to share these, and divide them among those interested- a great way to ensure its survival! Smiling

Thank you Neal. I would like the bulblets but sadly they can't be mailed to Canada so I will have to wait for seeds. Sad
