Neal : I dont really know what took them out. Maybe a parasite like yours. The spring crownes just stayed brown and krispy. One plant came up a few feet from the originalclump.
Now that I think of it, maybe thats where the Dark Purple have gone also.
oh I like that Landini, may have to look for that. I tried the black columbine and it died. Did not come back the following year and didn't seed either. I just assumed that the seeds were sterile for that one.
I do have a small clump of the black mondo grass but it is so short it is hardly noticeable really in the garden as a whole. Would be nice in a pot I think. Mine does grow really slow. I cannot recommend it as a garden plant for those reasons.
Celia, I agree. I have a small clump ( Mothersday gift ) near the fountain. It does reseed but doesnt spread at an alarming rate. I have seen it in formal plantings.
It has a nice pink bloom thats not too showie.

All good suggestions here. Black Elderberry stands out to me. Tried Black Beauty a few years ago. It survived the winter and was doing well until it abruptly died . Definitely want to grow those two.
I hate to sound like a wet blanket but I have never had any luck with the Blue poppies if you are talking about the Meconopsis.
Check around to see if other gardeners have had luck in our zone.
