I watched this juvenile Bald Eagle trying to scoop up a fish and he finally succeeded. Who knows it might have been his first.

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! I have to laugh as his feet look too big for him just like puppies feet do before they're full grown. Hilarious!

Christine, Cool shots of the Great Crested Flycatcher! The Brown-headed Cowbirds are here from January through May and sometimes into June. These are photos from a couple of years ago for comparison of the male and female ... they look quite different in coloration, the female doesn't have the dark brown head like the male.

Dave, I love your photos!! That Goldfinch is really pretty and I truly love Carolina Wrens and wish I'd see them hang out at my house. They used to build nests every year in Martin houses that I had in the backyard at our old house. Oh my, what can I say about those shots of the juvenile Bald Eagle ... FABULOUS! It indeed could have possibly been that birds first catch! Hurray!

Another young eagle this morning. This one seems to be a bit older and further along. The youngster from yesterday is also flying about. Sorry that the photos are not very good but's its very overcast and drizzling this morning and he is quite away out in the lake.

Can anyone tell me which bird this is? I've never seen anything like it before! Looked outside, just at the right time. They didn't stay long, and I can't find an ID for them. Any help is appreciated!

Natalie - I don't know as I've never seen one, but they sure are cute! Looks like parent and youngsters or a male trying to woo a female by sharing food. Too sweet! Smiling

I thought it was a male telling the other male to back away from his seeds, before anyone gets hurt! Hilarious! I sure hope that they come back! I'd love to get better pictures!

Natalie, they are evening Grosbeaks, beautiful birds, I love them, very friendly.

Male and female, enlarge to see her, and a good shot of a handsome male.

Hmmm. We supposedly had evening Grosbeaks in Utah, and I don't remember them looking like this! I think these have a lot more white on them than I remember. I need to read up some more on them. These are also larger than what I remember in Utah. Thanks so much for the ID on them!

I'm glad to hear that they are friendly! You told me a while back that the Pine siskins were friendly, and you weren't kidding! I have to shoo them off the thistle socks to refill them. They are not at all afraid of me, and I'm enjoying being so close to them!

The birds I saw in Utah were also in the summer. The orange color was about the same, but I just don't remember them looking like this, or being as big. Apparently, I had the wrong name for that bird in Utah! Or, I'm just remembering the name wrong. nodding

One came back a little bit ago, but saw me in the window, and took off. Hopefully they stick around for a while!

If you want to get good photos of them, take a chair and put it within range for a good zoom shot, just sit and wait, they will get used to you and come back for the food, I could get within 5 feet or closer to them eventually, and that is so awesome. Green Grin!

Thanks Margaret. I can get really close from my kitchen window, and have a 50x zoom, so that will work good enough. Besides, it is raining! Rolling on the floor laughing I'm just very hopeful at this point, that they hang around for a while. They are so pretty! I put more sunflower seeds out for them, so I hope that temps them!

I figured out what the bird in Utah was. It was a black-headed grosbeak.

Natalie, I meant when the weather is nice, I did not expect you to sit out in the rain. Hilarious! They love the sunflower seeds and now that they have found a good food source they may stay there all summer especially since you have lots of trees for nesting in. It is so much fun when they bring the babies back and feed them the sunflower seeds. Lovey dubby

You may also see the Black-headed, I get one or two of them here on occasion. nodding

Dave, nice shot of that pretty Red-shouldered Hawk and I love Doves ... they are very common down here too but one of my favorites.

Natalie & Margaret, great shots of those pretty Evening Grosbeaks ... that's one I've never seen before. So cute with the one bird feeding the other and I really love that male. The shape, size and bill remind me so much of a cowbird but the Grossbeak's color is gorgeous!
