We wanted to replace the lava rock mulch with something more biodegradable that would break down and add nutrients to the soil as it decomposed over time. However, the thought of digging out all the lava rocks that had become deeply embedded into the soil over the years seemed a formidable task.

How very clever! Looks like something I would do! But you have to stick with what works. I have a wonderful black friend who is forever picking at me for all the hair brained crazy methods I come up with for getting things done and the ways I rig things up to fix them. She will look at my mess, put her hand on her hip, look at me shaking her head and say "Donna, girl that is SO ghetto!!" Then we will both die laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing to which I will respond "yeah, but it works, and you gotta stick with what works!" I really love that girl, she is such a hoot. Not much of a green thumb, but a great friend.
