What is this thing?! My amaryllis bloomed last month then when the flowers fell off, this thing grew out of it. It blooms every year and I've never had this happen. Is it a new bulb? Should I plant it in some soil and see if it grows? Is it an alien?! LOL!
Amanda, the seed heads will get fat and begin turning a yellowish-tan or brown color and split open, revealing the dark brownish-black seeds. When you see it start to split you might want to tie something like nylon panty hose around the seed head it to keep the seeds from spewing or falling on the floor.

As the heads start splitting, you can also sow them directly, because hippeastrum seeds dry out pretty fast. That way you'll probably get the best results
