Yes, Walters does have nice stuff. A little bit more, but well worth it.

Ya know, a lot of times it's better to grow those liners out in pots for the first year or so... Pot them up and put them in the garden where you want them and leave them there in the pot for a year or so... Of if you don't plant the pot right away, sink it in your veggie garden over the winter and then pull them in the spring.

How deep is that Ice Follies planted? Too much soil and mulch covering them can make them come back smaller.

Cant get much smaller than that -- hahaha!!! Just kidding!!

He is just peeking out -- soil is to the crown and I had 2 inches of mulch on them -- I moved the mulch back a couple weeks ago so they could pop out!!

I am gonna hit the newbies with some BAP to give them a boost soon. Whistling

Rose,
How many years does it take to get those you show in post #5 to get to the large gallon size with 4-5 eyes like better garden centers sell. ((I am not getting any younger Rolling my eyes. ))

Depends on the variety, but I'd say at least 3 years for 4 to 5 eyes. I've been planting some that have been in pots since 2011 and they're really nice looking plants! I'm finding all kinds of pretty hosta out there!

Thx Rose. Too bad I didn't start 15 years ago. Hilarious! Do you have to cull many that don't look right?

Christine, why not do vegetables ? Can't beat a fresh tomato.

I have been growing hostas from liners since 1996.

I learned from making mistakes that liners are not to freeze the first winter. They arrived, I potted them in potting mix, in the fall I put them in a cool greenhouse, and let them go dormant, but not freeze.

Three months later, the hostas start growing, and by May, they have a significant size.

At this point, they need a much larger pot or plant them in their permanent place.

Last summer I bought about 2,000 liners on sale when QandZ stopped producing liners.

You should try some of my hostas. Most liners are no longer the small plant that they were.
There are some hostas that grow very slowly, but that is their nature.
