I am sorry, but no, Cheryl. I have several varieties but only grow the 'White Butterfly' for selling purposes. I actually began to grow the 'White Butterfly' not to sell but to attract hummingbirds. Their fragrance is wonderful. My other varieties are not very fragrant and those "cones" grow right at ground level. To tell the truth, I don't find them very interesting.

Ken, would that grow here in my zone 4 in Minnesota.

Karen, from zone 8 through zone 6, they die back each winter and re-emerge in the spring. I don't mulch mine at all. I recommend those in zones 4 and 5 to heavily mulch them, or if just a few or in pots, to dig them up and over-winter them dry in an area that does not get below 20 F. You would simply re-plant them in the spring, when the weather stays above 20 F.

I bought some of this ginger last summer, lateish..... I'm in a cold zone 7, and hoped it would make it.

We had a horrible horrible winter, and toward the end, after things had begun to warm up, we had one night of a sudden plunge into the single digits overnight.

I was sure my ginger was gone. I kept looking this spring as other plants emerged, but no.

Just now, reading the first post in this thread, I decided to go have one more look.

If so, though it will do fine in partial sun, it will bloom better with more full sun, a minimum of 6 hrs. (spring/summer). The 'White Butterfly', though a semi-tropical, is one tough plant. You might want to mulch yours this fall.

I mulched the living daylights out of it too, you better believe. I mulched just about everywhere but the ginger had several good inches extra.

When I planted it I thought that spot got more sun than it actually does, so yes, I am going to relocate it, soon as the emerging growth gets just a bit bigger. I have a spot that gets good sun where I think it will work but I have to look around some and make sure.

My butterfly ginger crop is huuuge! I have to stake them every year. They barely get enough sun so they bend to reach it. Yet they bloom the most fragrant blooms. The whole yard smells of them in the morning. Right now they are about 4 feet tall and it looks like I am growing corn. hahaha If you haven't grown them before, you should!

All the hedychiums I have ever grown have been fragrant except coccineum.

You are sure right about that, Cheryl. I have a small stand of them about 10' from our patio, and when we are out on the patio at dusk, the fragrance is wonderful. This year, for the first time, I am going to put a rhizome or two in a couple of large pots and those pots will be on the patio. These stalks should/will be only 4-5' tall, and we'll have hummers all over them in the summer time.

How much are the Rhizomes ?

MJ, I have it listed on my website @ $6.95 for a plump, 6-10" rhizome. Most rhizomes produce a minimum of two stalks. I have discounted it to $5.95 for ATP subscribers or 3 rhizomes for $15.00, plus shipping. Shipping to your town should be around $5.45 for a single and $7.95 for three.

Great idea about potting a few up that way. I may do that too. Er, once I get them going properly that is.

Once those rhizomes sprout, Kyla, they are good to go. A couple of advantages with them being in pots, is that those pots can be placed to maximize sun exposure and when/if you want to over-winter them indoors, those potted rhizomes are easy to dig up. Just remember when planting them, these rhizomes grow just under the surface of the soil. I put only an inch of soil over the rhizomes when I plant them.

Thanks, Ken! I prepped the area they're going to move to this morning. They will have plenty of sun and as they spread they will spread into areas currently occupied by annuals (sunflowers at the moment.) They're bigger today than they were yesterday! I just want to make fairly sure I can locate everybody. Maybe this afternoon I'll make the move.

Yes, about the potting idea! I am going to do that today. You can't have enough yard fragrance in my book. And these are WONDERFUL!!
