They love lots of water, and keep it in mostly shade, or the colors fade. Some Caladiums are "tolerant" of sun but they never have nearly the nice colors they get if they're in the shade.

If you live where it cools off in winter, they will die back completely under ground, so don't forget to label the pot, or the spot where you planted them. If it freezes where you are, a thick layer of mulch is a good idea to keep the corms from freezing. They'll come up year after year if you care for them nicely.

It always helps to add your location so advice can be more specific. Just go to the little person in the top right hand corner of this screen and click on "my profile" and you can add a region or even just a zone, your choice.

For example, if you live in zone 8 or lower on the east coast of the US, Caladium bulbs need to be dug and stored for the winter. At my last home the soil never got below 55 degrees f but because it stayed damp in the winter caladium bulbs just rotted. People nearby who were blessed with sandy soil which drained well had no problems. Good luck with your new plant.

Hi! thanks for the reply
I live in Puerto Rico its warm all year round. Also very high humidity. I have them in my room and sleep with air con at night. Its on my west facing window and receives bright light for about 4-5 hours a day. I've had it for about a week and I just noticed some discolored and droopy bottom leaves?
Any ideas o advice?

Do you have a spot outdoors where you cold plant it in a garden? It will be much happier outside in the humidity. The cool air at night may be making it want to go dormant. Here in Florida, they disappear completely by October and don't pop up again until it's hot in May or so.

Otherwise, lots of water and make sure the sun isn't shining directly on it through the window.

Sweetheart Caladium is a very pretty one, I've never grown caladiums indoors, I will say that one prefers more shade and get wilty in too much direct sunlight. Unfortunately it only lasted a few years in my garden.

Thanks for the advice. I will consider moving it outside or somewhere in my house with no air con.

Hi again!
I moved my caladium outside for one day and almost all the leaves have drooped down. I hate to think she could be dying. I just moved it back inside and watered it because it always seems happier after getting a drink. Is there anything I can do to help it regain its springiness?

Perhaps it got too much sun too quickly?

How long have you had it? Mine usually last about 3 or 4 months at most then they start to look droopy and subside back underground. But they do come back nicely again every spring once it really warms up.

A picture would help us to see what might be wrong - too small a pot, compacted soil or the sudden climate change from your cool, dry house to the hot humid outdoors could all cause it to react this way. And definitely too much light if it got any direct sun while it was outdoors.
