During the storm, waiting for it to go away, is the most boring thing I have ever endured in my life. You're stuck. You must just sit around and wait. At night, you can play with the candles, that's about all.

Guam has had many storms over the years. I haven't been there, but a friend said the buildings all look like bunkers because of the storms. So, hopefully she's OK. I bet the corn didn't make it! Poor corn!

These days, I am thankful there is social media..if news/updates from local news or the govt itself gets delayed..somewhere/somehow, we get more viable updates via Twitter, FB, viber..just any news..especially if damage is great.

You have that right, Tariv. When the World Trade Center was hit by those planes, I was on a forum of scuba divers, some of whom actually saw it happening. I logged on when the second plane hadn't hit yet. Amazing! I wasn't home at the time, was on the island of Bonaire. Sure felt strange! That, in my mind, is right there with the President Kennedy asasination, I remember being in high school, waiting for the bus to go home. A thousand sad, silent teenagers.

Odd moments in one's lifetime...

Hey, Kadie, where are you?

Kadie was able to send a message through and asked for me to let you all know here that she and her loved ones are safe and staying out of the rain. Lost power and so could not correspond on this site. Will contact you all soon. A lot of clean up for them.

M., the info on the link you so kindly provided is correct with regards to our island being in the "typhoon alley," and it's true we rarely get direct hits [considering the number of storms that develop just southeast of us]. And yes, we are affected by those storms that do not hit us by virtue of the rains that are thrown our way.
But it is not true what your friend says, "buildings all look like bunkers because of the storms." Wonder if they only visited the bunkers on the battle sites. "It is known for white beaches and historic World War II battle sites." Hilarious!
We have beautiful Spanish-style homes and "haciendas," so please everyone, do not pass on the idea that we live in bunkers. Rolling on the floor laughing
We're okay, just have a lot of work in cleaning up green debris.

M. you lost your bet--the corn did make it. But we lost some trees around it. Sad

Thank you everyone for your kind and caring concern. I and we are okay. Just have to do a lot of cleaning up outside. My adeniums may be okay--still have them in shelter. As far as I know, none have flown the coop. Hilarious!

Tarev,
It's weird that this typhoon veered north, but I'm glad. The Philippines and your family and friends will be spared this trauma this time. Hurray!
It stopped raining last night so will take my seedlings out of shelter and into sunshine. Have taken some pictures of damages. Will post later. Smiling

It's good to hear from you Kadie and that you and yours are well. Melissa will be back on Monday. I'm sure she's going to be surprised about the corn. I feel for you about the loss of trees. I lost 2 large oaks trees that my husband and I planted over 20 years ago, this past winter. We bought a lot with a few trees, but the idiots we hired to clear the lot, also cleared the trees. This left us with very little shade. Now with the loss of the oak trees, it's a challenge to garden in fun sun without a shady respite for the plants. I have a lot of perrenials in pots, while I find a suitable place to relocate them. It's going to take a while, especially with new health challenges. Sighing! Fortunately, my DRs usually can take the sun. Right now, they are in a sick bay recovering from being neglected while I was away caring for my parents. I think I lost one. It got too dry while it was trying to come out of dormancy, and I think the shock was too much for it. Thumbs down

Hi Deb,
Tried to post some pictures but internet service is very slow right now, so will try later. Wow, you will miss those oak trees for sure. I lost two 80 ft. acacia trees that we planted 15 years ago, and many broken branches on others. Sad None of the ironwood trees fell, probably because the roots are able to break through the limestone bedrock and anchor deep. I think they helped protect some of our fruit trees: avocado, mango, part of the breadfruit tree, and others. Smiling
All my adenium seedlings are accounted for--I'm sure they're happy to be out in the sun again. Hurray! I'm sorry about health issues--I know what that's like. Take care.

Ironwood trees,? I have to look that up. In any case, I'm glad that they protected your fruit trees and it's good to hear that your DRs can enjoy the sun again. Thumbs up

Hooray for the corn! And, maybe too late now, but if you pruned and pushed back into place the Acacias, and thrown some dirt or mulch onto the roots, they may survive. Just a thought.

Ironwood is amazing! I found an ancient structure on a deserted beach that was only the ironwood frame, but the wood, even out in the tropical elements for more than 100 years was so hard that I couldn't scratch or dent it with my thumbnail.

OK, off to work!

Cheers,

Melissa

Yeah, right! You got a backhoe? Cables? We could upright that 70 - 80 footer, stabilize it with steel cables, and mound up some dirt on roots. Hilarious!

Hmm, maybe keep a new one shorter. No, wait! I just found a construction company for you, will have a backhoe in your yard first thing in the morning! Hooray! (I'm joking, by the way!)
