Very interesting! in Explanations of How Plants Respond to Light

I couldn't figure out why one of my plants looked parched/dry/thirsty even though I had watered the day before. Research tells me this plant is exhibiting a "nyctinastic" response to approaching night. The plant knew when it was day and when it was night, folded its leaves, and appeared to be napping. Wow, a nyctinastic response is fantastic. Do plants sleep? Yes, and they do a whole lot more. There are several types of nastic responses in the plant world.

@coconut, You are correct that the image I selected does not exactly show epinasty in action; but what would? I was weary and did the best I could, trying to take images that were available in the ATP database.

After weeks of reading and researching each of the plant movements, I was ready to cave in. I found a good explanation for epinasty in a book by Gerard Meuant, "Flooding and Plant Growth" and since gravity can have some effect on epinasty, I figured the heavy seed head image was close enough and better than no image at all. (Plus Trish wanted us to hurry and finish our articles in progress and she was doing a bit of 'housecleaning'.

)

Please, if you or anyone can supply a series to photo images to show epinasty it would be appreciated.

A google image search for epinasty shows some very interesting things. Pine tree spring growth showing (epinasty) twisting and curling new growth caused by an auxin herbicide. Tomato plants showing twisted, curling from pollution or herbicide use. Ethylene gas makes this happen, also. And, I believe, some viruses.

Hum. Yes, I'll have some photos by Friday afternoon, I know of a few papaya plants that are virused, and the leaves exhibit this growth 'malfunction'.

Flooding also causes epinasty. Dont' forget to check for that.
