Not yet, Sandy, but we are going to have a Dedication Ceremony/Grand Opening at some point. There's a neighborhood association with an email list we can use. But I spoke to a few people on the street as I was setting up yesterday. So word is spreading already. Green Grin!

Hi Karen. Now I just have to figure out how to get anyone to take the seeds I put in there. Zin seeds and also the wildly easy to grow seeds from Cosmos sulphureus which if people would plant them, they would be delighted! However, it's been terrible hot (though it cooled off some yesterday and today) and no fool wants to be otside planting stuff, not even me.

Rolling my eyes.

Anyone that's new to growing stuff will likely be more inspired in the spring, Kyla ! (maybe you could add some beginner gardening books to the mix...) Smiling

You're right, of course. And I've been thinking about gardening books too. Not ready to give up any I have around but I'm not above acquiring something to "seed" the library with. Whistling

Mmmmm ... maybe set a few seedling starts near the library, in give-away Dixie cups?

Like training deer to come to a clearing by planting Brassicas there.

They might come back to see if more seedlings were put out, and then take or leave a book or seeds instead.

Update:

Finally. Somebody took a packet of zin seeds, and left, in its place, an unopened package of Burpee carrot seeds.

Yay! Action! I went ahead and put out some of the vegetable seed packets that came with the Library, to encourage further taking and giving and stuff.

I've selected Little Free Library as something I am interested in on Google News, and have read about one being burned up in Denver ( ! what meanies! ), one in Delaware that is "lifting literacy" in a beach town there (because, yanno, people are taking books and, presumably, reading them), and that in the Basque region of Spain, the idea has spawned a cousin, to wit, the Little Free Fridge, where neighbors share their leftovers with each other! Apparently that is going well, cooked food only, and stuff doesn't stay in there for long. Kind of a potluck takeout effect?

Oh, and we are also seeing books move in and out of our LIttle Free Library. We haven't yet done any kind of dedication or grand opening or any announcement of any sort, but word is spreading.

Around here I'm pretty sure the "Little Free Beer Barrel" would get the most action... with beer going out, anyway ! Rolling on the floor laughing

I really love the little free library idea; and the little store about half a mile from us is about to reopen with some new owners (the last one was - uh - less than upstanding, to put it kindly), who we're casually acquainted with and I bet they'd be up for the idea of locating one there at the store! Once they get settled in and started up with the store I'll have to talk to them about it Smiling
