Good morning Cindy. I am pleased that you enjoyed the article. The Thalictrum is in a friends garden and he didn't know what type of plant it is. I made the ID and hope that it is correct. I regret that I don't know what type it is. Are you familiar with the plant. It starts to bloom quite early and has a long bloom season.

Could that be Anemonella thalicroides? If so, they grow well here and I let them self-sow in almost total shade.

Thanks Cindy....I think you are correct. Looking on google it seems like there is some confusion about the right name use.

I only know the plant by the name I purchased it under. Probably some confusion because the leaves look like Thalictrum (which I also grow) but are smaller. I'd be interested to know if it does have a different name. It is one of my favorite early bloomers here.

I think Thalictrum is a generic name for a number of plants. I have seen the one in the picture referred to as Thalictrum amonella thalictroides and just Amonella thalictroides, or just amonella. All of this is above me

Sometimes TMI on the botanical names? On a bad day I can get confused as well.

The genus Anemonella no longer exists. Its species were reclassified as species of Thalictrum many years ago.

So the plant name is now Thalictrum thalictroides?

Yes, as ridiculous as that sounds, it is the plant's name. It once was Anemonella thalictroides, which meant "Anemonella resembling a Thalictrum," but then the genus was reclassified as Thalictrum, so the name now means "Thalictrum resembling a Thalictrum."

I did think the new botanical name was rather redundant. I think it was the only species in the genus Anemonella. Read that it was changed in 1957 but I sure didn't buy my plants that long ago.Thanks, zuzu, for that information.
