I've done this task, for me it took years. (That's Ok :} ) As far as training, I know that there are some varieties that are much easier than others. Maybe a list of some "Uprights" that are fast and woody? A list of your varietal successes would be fabulous! I would just add that when you begin the process it's nice to tie the "trunk(s)" tightly to the stake. That keeps it REALLY straight. Later on, once the head has begun, I loosen the tape a bit, a larger stake now but a bit more mobility. Watch out for any wind. They snap easily in wind. Thank you John, Good info!

A month ago I visited a garden/nursery that had two standards planted on either side of a walkway steps, fairly short about 2 ft maybe but big enough to be recognized for what they were. I had never seen that before or realized that there were upright varieties of fuchsias. They had some for sale trained into standards but oh so pricey but, they did have some upright plants for sale so I purchased one of those. When I got it home I didn't feel that cutting off 3 of the 4 stems was the right way to start a standard as the plant was pretty established. I have heard that they are fairly easy to root so maybe I will give it a try next year. Since that time I have paid a bit more attention and found an upright variety sold at a local nursery. Looking forward to more info on this.
