Finally found this thread... the title has changed Blinking which surprised me, I didn't know we could change the title and mostly I guess because I'm personally not convinced that your plant is a mulberry.

@plantrob I was looking up info about a plant called Pentapetes phoenicea and ran across a link to your site~ http://www.robsplants.com/plan...

Looking at the plant reminded me of this thread and thought I would stir the pot...

The leaves look different. As the suggested plant is a tender perennial, it wouldn't survive Penn. winters.

If you look at the above link, it's to a plant that plantrob grew in Penn; he said he grows it as an annual. That's what made me think about this thread because I remembered that it was started by the same person.

We don't have many pics in the ATP database Noon Flower (Pentapetes phoenicea)

Still think these are the immature leaves of a Mulberry. If the plant dies back to the ground or is cut back to the ground the mature leaf shape may never be seen.

On the other hand it should be easy enough to identify it as a Pentapetes phoenicea IF the plant produces the correct flowers and the correct seed pods; should have the answer in one growing season.

Hope to hear from Plantrob. I was reading his notes about growing P. phoenicea and he said the plant wasn't making the flowers and wasn't sure if it was because he was too far north? Also wondering if he kept the plant in question and/or found out anything new. Smiling

I thought of this plant another time awhile back, when I was looking at my own photos -

Greene, what kind of young mulberry tree do you think they are?

It could be anything. I'm certainly not positive and am only offering my opinion. It will be up to the OP to check our suggestions, do research and make a decision.

I had already posted what information I had on the other thread. I got as far as immature Mulberry and possibly Morus alba but have not confirmed that with the plant experts. The tree is not growing in my yard but at a big box store where the landscape crew continually cut it back so the mature leaves never happen. Let's invite @chelle and see what she has to say; she has the Mulberry growing at her place.

I have no idea if it's Morus or not. I know they can be quiet variable. If it is Morus, I doubt you will be able to tell which one from the photo, you pretty much have to have it in your hands. This is how the dichotomous key at Flora of North American shows the difference.

Morus alba:
Leaf blade abaxially glabrous or with pubescence only along major veins or in tufts in axils of principal lateral veins and midribs, adaxially glabrous to sparsely pubescent.

Morus rubra:
Leaf blade abaxially pubescent or puberulent, adaxially with short, stiff, antrorsely appressed trichomes, usually scabrous.

From my experience, which is only with M. rubra - the young saplings have the deeply lobed leaves (nothing like the ones above) but once they mature they get less lobed. Even if my dh cuts the same tree down over and over, it will mature and the leaves change shape. Also common with mulberry, all of the trees branch out with woody stems, not up with many green stems, like the OP's. From what I've found searching, M. alba is similar. I think a good way to tell M. rubra from M alba is the leaves of M. rubra are rough like sandpaper, where M. alba is smooth. But that doesn't help anything in this situation.

Like I mentioned, I'm still hoping Rob, the OP will have new info about this plant. Smiling

Thanks for the key (I will look up each of the terms and make notes for myself)...I took a ride to the plant that I know and dang if the landscapers haven't scalped the thing again. It will be a while until I can access the back of the fence to get a closer look.

Shrug! Does anyone know why we haven't heart from @plantrob? His last post on ATP was 5 months ago.

I'd guess a mulberry. I have one in my fence line (underneath a mature, fruiting mulberry) that looks the same. I keep whacking it back, but it really needs to be dug out...along with the rest of new ones that get missed in their first year.
Mine grows back with at least twice the number of branches... similar to sculpting and shaping a shrub for fullness.

This is what I'm used to seeing ~

Although, in looking closely at the leaves, they appear smooth on top so this is probably M. alba.

I know this is an old thread but have a similar if not the same plant as a volunteer in my yard under a globe willow tree. I'm thinking it is a mulberry, most likely a Morus rubra, since the leaf is rough. I have a large mulberry tree in my yard and get quite a few seedlings from it but this is different than those. I will let it grow until next year to see what is happening with it but if anyone has further information then I would appreciate it.
If you would like pictures I can supply those also. Thanks

@ kgriffall; Perhaps you can show pics on a new post, would love to see that. Btw could the plant in question in this old post are Morus australis var. linearipartita?

@plantrob the foliage looks similar to some fig trees I grow. Is the plant still alive? Have you seen any mulberries on it yet?
