Mine haven't but the flopping could be the result of stems that aren't strong enough. Some people cut off every other stem at the base to allow for more air circulation (helping to cut down on mildew issues) and it may improve the stem strength.

To prevent self seeding remove spent flowers ASAP. Mine do seed. I was not aware of that and have been pulling volunteers out all spring & summer. I may get id of it.

Once I spied a clump of lavender in the woods along a roadside and when I stopped found they were some wild species off phlox. I illegally dug some and as punishment, I think, they have spread far and wide almost twenty feet and are impossible to eliminate. They spread by roots, long hairy ones and if you pull them every blasted hair sprouts a new plant. On the other hand, I found some small boxes of phlox Laura in our super market for three something. I bought one. They were small live little divisions. It died. I got stubborn. I bought another. It died. Over thirty dollars later I tried potting one up and finally got one to live. It has taken over five years for that plant to form a clump but now it is too thick and looks beautiful but is hidden behind a huge clump of cone flowers. Two years ago I decided to learn how to pollinate it and cross it with a clump of a late white phlox-finally got about twenty seeds that remain in the refrigerator as I'm not sure how to germinate them. I shall try again this year and maybe just plant the seeds outside or learn to winter sow them.--Weedy

While I am posting about phlox, I want to complain about Orange Perfection. It is a big disappointment. Hasnt increased and blooms are small.

I understand that it isn't really orange either?

There are no true orange phlox. They are all shades of pink

I love phlox, but have killed way too many. Your David is wonderful Jo Anne and Arlene, all of your are so nice too. Mine either just don't come back after winter or get mildew.

I agree about Orange Perfection. It didn't do well for me at all. And no, it isn't orange.

Mine are more Fire red.

Interesting that Orange Perfection doesn't perform well for you, considering your success with lots of other varieties. It does well here, but is the last one to start blooming- usually around the end of July.


I just picked up a new one a few days ago called "Blue Flame". Our local Kroger grocery has a limited, but nice selection of perennials. They had about a half dozen Blue Flame that caught my eye one day, and after looking around the garden I found a great spot for it. Went back and they only had one left, which isn't as blue as the rest, but still pretty. Hoping it will appear more blue later...

I tried a Mystique Black Phlox, the only time it was Black was when it was budded. When blooms opened it was pale lilac.

Well I continue to pollinate the phlox, now I have seeds on a late white from Laura pollen and dozens of seeds on Laura and this year I obtained seeds from both cultivars on a wild species. The wild one is the very devil to identify and maybe it is really an escape because I dug it up along a country road. There are dozens of species of wild phlox!!Winter sow??? ---Weedy

Winter sowing does well for phlox.

I planted a Blue Flame also. It is very pale blue, nearly white, but a nice dwarf selection. My Coral Flame of the same series is an outstanding performer.
I just got one Franz Schubert late this summer. Anyone have that, and does it do well?

Yes! I love Franz Schubert! Such a pretty color and a good grower - no mildew.

Thanks Arlene! I got a small sale plant from Santa Rosa a couple of weeks before my post above. It bloomed already and is indeed a very pretty color.
