Thank you all, in particular Geof with " I quite I like it." Should sports me renamed? I'm at times caught in a bind with the Id issue. This summer, my proportion of Noids plus singles as usual outweigh the named individuals. Yet there are quite a few that I really like and will like to multiply and surely I will. Perhaps one day they get named meanwhile, should we just name with Quotes? Should we consider that as a fun game? I fully understand the value for horticulture and the trade, naming reliably cultivars. But those others should we discard them ?. Obviously on the private personal level, NO, after all I doubt that when in bloom dahlias are at all aware of what we as a species name them. Hilarious! On the other hand perhaps as crew members of the world's Noah' Ark we could just for the fun device a provisional system that we could share with others. Something half way from full registry . Perhaps others have found a somewhere in the middle path, with the Id question; but dahlias with their enormous genetic variability are a real teaser. Hopefully sooner than later I'll try to get hold a minimally decent digital camera so that I can upload pics of those that at least I want to keep and will identify somewhow. (I belong to the group that was reluctant to jump onto digital photography initially and still has an old film Nikon camera with those wonderful optical lenses that used to be very costly. I've yet to jump over to the already not so new technology... Sighing! I still prefer to spend my time with my plants even though I fully value pics and the incredible stimulus that it provides to gardeners and students everywhere.)

There are a number of "sports" out there that are now officially named (Though I can't think of any off the top of my head). Here in the US, I believe the way to have a name become official is for a new dahlia to be entered into ADS shows and have it earn at least two blue ribbons. - then it goes into the ADS book.

Of course that doesn't mean you can't call it anything you want to, in the privacy of your own home Smiling

Perhaps we could call them the XYZ pirl series or Mandolls series or even hampartsum series and if anyone wants some to trade them as well. True hybridizer could then pick out those that catch their fancy and name them, and get about the ADS registry system plus ribbons and so forth. I was thinking it just for the fun. I'm sure that there's a pretty sizeable lot of worthwhiles just waiting for their chance for celebrity. Sometime mongrels end up better dogs than much for aristocratic named breeds... Hilarious!
