You have a fabulous collection Stush! Can you tell me anything about how the warty kind progresses. Is there anything I should or should not do to really wart em' all up?

I got them last year from a good friend on another site. Just let them go their own way. The grand kids just love them. I don't fertilize them at all. Seems I end up doing more harm than good.

Just sharing my E. Paul Bunyan growing experience..My E. Paul Bunyan goes very warty when it gets water stressed, looks rosy red on the edges when it feels cold and warty during our winters here in case our winter rains do not show up. Then when the warm season returns and is in some shade and if I get to water them more, they grow smooth leaves again. Somehow it is like stress oriented, like wrinkling up. It really likes the warmer temps though, that is when I get the bloom stalks and if they turn too leggy, I do my chopping in early Spring, so it has the whole summer to form the new rosettes.

The repotted ones doing okay, some smoother leaves, some wrinkly: water coming from my other containers above it, so I guess some parts of the E. Paul Bunyan container got a bit more water:

Very interesting and useful information Tarev. Thankyou for sharing. The fact that it reverts back to smooth leaves with more attention is a mind bender. So I guess that genetic mutation is like a form of cancer that is triggered with stress. Geeze now I feel bad about my first warts. I just moved them to a new pot a few weeks ago and the warts are a protest. I am going to have to get over that I guess. Shrug! It makes sense though. I have a redish purple one that I have been giving lots of attention to and it is growing like crazy with all smooth leaves. It has had some sludge from the bottom of the goldfish pond for snacks and plenty of water. hmmmm.......

Stush, as a grown up grandchild I love them too! If my grandparents had some of those I would probably been in trouble for touching them to much. I had a pet persimmon tree so I can only imagine how in love I would have been with one of these as a kiddo.

Audrey,
If you look closely, the color is different on the warts. Grandkids just can't stop touching them and it's ok with me. Does no real harm. Can't expect them to keep their hands off them. Let them have some fun. Who knows it may all be theirs soon. I can only wish.

Oh Stush, please enjoy every bit of your grand kids. My grandparents shaped all the good parts of me and I am sure they would have let me touch them if they had those then. Who knows what little gardener your nourishing Lovey dubby

Messing something up is a good lesson too, just one we hope isn't learned with an only copy of a particularly special plant!
