Girdling in How To Get Rid of Unwanted Trees

Why do buckthorn and other nefarious trees and woody shrubs seem to plant themselves right in the middle of other plants that you want to keep? How can you get them out without hurting your prized specimens?

It sounds like the perfect answer except I don't know what"Girdling" a plant means. What do you do to the plant to girdle it?

Replace your lawn with a garden!

Susie, it means that you cut off the bark and a little way into the wood in a strip a couple of inches wide all the way around the trunk of the tree.
