I'm inclined to get moss here too, Greg. Lime solves the problem easily. Thumbs up

I have treated my lawn for years with lime thanks to all the clay. It really does wonders to get rid of moss. Especially if you put the lime down before a rainy season. I just have to avoid one big area so the lime doesn't hit my Japanese iris. Overall, a big thumbs up to lime as a cheap and affective way to deal with moss.

There is moss in our barrels, especially in the shady places.

Sprinkle some lime on the barrels and let us know if it dies off. I get moss on part of my roof. Maybe I should put lime up there! Blinking

It takes over down here. And when it takes over a patch of grass, then dries out in the hot summer sun, it leaves a patch of bare ground and yellow bits of moss. It also means the ground has become acidic.

Lynn - (to get back to the original question!!). I have Champagne and Strawberries and will probably have some ready to trade next year. Just got another rhizome of it as a bonus so need to see if it takes off!

Do you have any available this year?

Henhouse said:There was a discussion in our club some time back about using Epsom Salts. One of our "experts" (probably Joe or Riley) said that the minerals can build up in the soil and become toxic. But I was thinking that perhaps it may have to do with our lack of year-round rainfall that doesn't allow the minerals to leach out. Confused

There was an article in our local newspaper a year ago by a master gardener and what you say is true. In the area I live we already have a large quantity of these minerals in our soil and they don't recommend adding Epsom salts.

Nope. Been too busy to get to digging and sorting yet. I have beds to finish and a side of the house to paint when I am not at work. And all this rain is making it difficult!!

Maybe moss is an indication of acidic soil? The subject of this thread seems to spontaneously mutate...it went from epsom salts to lime, or are they related?

Yes, moss is an indication of acidic soil and lime neutralizes the soil making growing conditions unfavorable for moss. That is why people spread garden lime in bearded iris beds to get rid of moss. Also bearded don't like acidic soil. Japanese iris on the other hand like acidic soil and will die if you put lime on them.
