I think most seed swaps would welcome you. If you didn't want anything offered in that swap, maybe the organizer would pre-arrange to pay back your one-way postage.

Or you might even see some seeds you'd like to try!

We talked once about setting up some kind of "welcome new member" seed give-away, but no one volunteered to do the work or hold the "stash". (There are also the questions of figuring out what each new member might want, and what might grow there, or be invasive there.)

BTW, if you go into the Plant Database and find seeds or plants that you have, you can "Add Them To Your Plant List" and give them categories like "Available for Trade", "Available For Sale", or create your own custom category like : "Available For Postage".

Then each person who goes to that variety in the database will see the list of people who "Have" that plant or seed. From that list, its easy to see "Available for Trade" and fairly easy to see what personal category you have them in.

The "official categories" are :
- "Available for Trade" and
- "Available For Sale"
We don't have an official category for "Available for Postage" or "Available for SASE". (Yet)
Hmm, "Available for Acorns?" I'd go for that!

I guess someone could list seeds seeds as "Available for Sale", with a price of 0 cents plus S&H.

I have personal categories :
- - "Got Lots: for Postage" and
- - "Seeds Available For Trade" and
- - "Just A Few Seeds Left".

So tell me!

Let's see ... I'll assume that you already have a "Plant List", even if it is just one random plant from the Plant database that you "Added to your plant list". (I'll add that initial step in my next post.)

- Go to "Your Profile" by clicking the head-and-shoulders icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.

- Page down a few times, past a blog if you have one, to "tx_flower_child's Plant Lists"

- Then click the first line under "tx_flower_child's Plant Lists". That should be the line for "your entire list". There will also be one more line for each private category you've created.

Now, how do we create new categories?

Look to the far left of the screen that you just navigated to.
You should see one entry "Managing your categories". Click that.
Enter a name for the category under this line:
"To create a category, enter a new category name below:"
Be sure to click "Add the category".

If some of those buttons are not visible, let me know. Maybe the FIRST category needs to be added some other way, which I would have to search longer for.

Just in case the above won;t work without at least one plant in "Your Plant List", try ading you first plant.

1. Find any entry in the Plant Database that you're interested in.
At the top of the far-left, blue menu bar, click "Plant Database".

Type some names, common or scientific, into the "Search for a plant" box.
Enter
Pick one that's interesting,

2. Click on one of the search results, which will take you to that plant's database entry.

3. Within the entry for one plant variety in the Database, page down, down, down. All he way down, past photos and comments, Event Reports and Related threads. You're getting close when you see "Adding Actions" and "Editing Actions:".

Below them, find:
Plant List
Dark blue button: "Add this plant to your list".

Click the dark blue button: "Add this plant to your list".

Now you have a Plant List with one entry, and you can add categories.

Maybe some of those steps look different the very first time you click on them. If so, let me know where these directions fail and I'll try again.

This is good but I have a question, maybe more. Before starting this experiment I already had 35 plants in my Plant Database. All of them are marked HAVE.
So I added 2 new categories. 'Cuttings available for postage' and 'Seeds available for postage'. (Indirect quotes. No short term memory.)
Is there a possibility that I could make these subcategories? Or maybe I could use the Notes field for that, assuming it's visible to other people.

Technical question: what are QR Codes? As in the codes one can use for scanning stuff?

Ponder that and in the meantime I'll find something else to add to my plant database.

Bingo! I picked an epiphyllum that I had but kept making cuttings due to rot. So now I'll go back and delete the entry.

Here's the initial view of my plant list followed by the specific entry. Dang it. Wrong format. Ok. Get out your magnifying glasses if you want to actually read the specific listing. Don't have time to play with formatting.

Joan, you can categorize each individual plant more than once. For example, I may have a plant that is categorized as "Perennial" "Native" and "Medicinal" in my plant list. I can then sort just for "Native" or any other category I have set up. I use the comment section for personal placement, where I got the plant, and some rudimentary care instructions. My list is all public, you are welcome to check it out for ideas on how to set up your own.

On the line that's more specific, is that little trash can what I need to use to delete the entry I used for my example? I did actually get a cutting all the way from Sweden no less of E. 'Super Chief', but I it would rot and I'd cut it ad nauseum until there was less than an inch left. I'm so talented. I can kill almost any plant. And yet, optimistically, I heard a pied piper beckoning me to go to one of my favorite local nurseries to grab a couple of fall asters.

Deb's idea sounds good: you can file one plant under more than one Category. I didn't know that! (Hi, Deb!)

I think there is only "Your Plant List" and then "Categories". If I understood your question correctly, there is no such things as a sub-category.

Whether the Notes are visible in any given screen, I don't know. There are "Comments" visible in Seed Swap views, but those "Comments" might be different from a "Your Plant List Note". I think you would have to experiment. Nut my guess is that, if someone is viewing "Your Plant List", those are the Notes that would be visible.

I think so, yes. But I ignore them since I guess that they are whatever commercial drivel winds up on stakes in Wal-Mart or HD: useless, generic, or wrong information! Maybe they are totally different in our database and on plants in big box stores.

So, really, the answer SHOULD be: I don't know about the QR codes.

Those photos looked like you only had one category: the "seeds for postage" Category was not visible.


I wonder if the "Seed Swap Tool" can be used to organize an on-going cutting swap or offer? People could list plants they are willing to cut and mail for postage. Probably have to list "in what season" the cuttings should be taken. Others could request them.

But I don't see how it could work like a one-time seed swap, where one central person receives all the trades on one date, and then ships them out to everyone after all incoming trades have arrived. I would assume that a "cuttings swap" or "cuttings-for-postage" deal would have to be mailed to the final recipient on the same day the cutting was taken.

Rick - When you say that you only see 1 category, are you referring to the cut & paste screen prints I posted above? If so, that's b/c I only used 1 plant as an example to see if this worked. And it is kinda like a subcategory, depending on how one's mind works.

I now owe zuzu an apology b/c when I attempted to undo my example, I hit delete or whatever. Guess that's for deleting an entry in the main plant database. Oops. Later I saw the little trashcan icon and I guess that's what I was supposed to use.

I think we're on the same page, so to speak, about the QR codes.

Ahh, yes. That makes perfect sense.

Now my main reason for having a "Plant List" is that it's the easiest way I know to add items to me Seed Swap List.
