I forgot to mention earlier that it seems that the spent blooms of Mary's Gold seem to come off very easily. Maybe that has something to do with being difficult to set pod too.

This is one of my faves, which is funny because I'm not a fan of yellows/oranges. But MG is just so darn beautiful, how can you help but love it? I garden with "benign neglect," -- I rarely water, and even more rarely fertilize. I've had MG for several years now (I forget exactly when she came home with me - might have been 2013), and she's a great performer in my yard. She's in full sun with absolutely no shade, and puts on a show almost every day of her bloom season.

I'm really glad I brought her home. nodding

In reading the comments, I noticed one said it was top branched, whereas mine always bloomed down in the foliage. It was usually doubled with the petals laying over each other rather than the double look of standing up in the middle. It was pretty, but, I didn't like that I had to bend down to see the blooms. I gave it to my niece this Spring. It's a very strong gold color that's sometimes hard to look at and difficult to photograph!
Beauty pleases, not only the eyes, but the heart as well. ~~Sheila

I absolutely love Mary's Gold. The color just glows! It was not happy in the shade, so I moved to the front yard in full sun, and it has done very well. Moderate branching and bud count, but so so beautiful. I can never keep very much of this one, because it's the first one I give to people who say "I already have a yellow one." I'm like, you don't have THIS yellow one. MG gets a ton of compliments when people see it in person. You just can't capture that radioactive glow in a photo. I also love the black anthers. They add just that little accent that sets off the look. (Local report coming soon.)

I was thinking the same thing! Like Jessie said, I too like the black anthers. They really are a great accent to the orange.

Mary’s gold is an awesome daylily. I started my collection with it and three other cultivars in 1997. I remember walking onto the property of Roycroft Daylilies in 1997. Mary’s Gold was shining like a beacon among 499 other varieties calling out, “Buy me. Buy me.” I have never regretted heeding that call. Mary’s Gold continues to stand out I my border. It is a strong clump former and offers a lot of stunning gold bloom held well above the foliage on 34” scapes. Mary's Gold continues to demand the attention of the garden visitor. This old favorite continues to hold its own among the modern hybrids.

I did not take measurements or counts last year. I wish I had. I remember this plant as being tall last year and being a robust bloomer. This year it has not performed as well. I did pull eleven dead scapes from it. It has multiplied to 15 fans. But, the scapes only averaged 23 inches tall with only 2 way branching and only 8 buds per scape. I do hope it does better going into the fall season.
No blooms on the plant today, this photo was taken back in May. You can see in the photo how low the bloom was down in the foliage.
