If they were registered late in the year they will not be there until the next update which I think happens pretty soon. There is a cutoff after which they are technically registered as 2016.

It's just that I had thought that a hybridizer would register (or at least reserve) the names of new cultivars, before making them public...
Can't somebody else 'kipnap' the names "Zyzzified" or "She Sells Seashells" now?

If these names are in the process of being registrated, don't they show up in the AHS database as pre-registrations?

Mayo, I love your questions! I often have the same questions, but I just sit here feeling smart, and wait for someone else to ask, so I don't have to give up the fact that I don't know much about this stuff.

I love all of those daylilies! I doubt that I'll ever be brave enough to risk that kind of money on a plant, but I sure do love looking at the pictures!

As of this morning there was a statement written on the database search screen that the database info has not been updated since August 10th, so anything submitted around or since that date probably hasn't been entered yet. But she probably had received confirmation of her registrations before she posted them.

We can always ask Fred about the process, since he goes through it each year... And I'm pretty sure you don't have to preregister first.

You are correct in that the database is only loaded periodically. This is the very busy time of year for the Registrar, as the calendar year for registrations ends on November 1st. Cultivars registered after Nov. 1 will be registered as 2016 registrations. There is no such thing as pre-registration, that was done away with years ago. Some people choose to reserve names before they register, but remember there is a cost to do this, so others will wait until they are ready to actually register and introduce the cultivars and take their chances that the name hasn't been selected. Anyone who registers should first do a search of the database to make sure that the name hasn't already been taken or that there isn't already a name that sounds too similar to what has been selected, as a very close name could also be rejected.

I expect the DB will probably not be reloaded with all the new entries until some time after Nov. 1st.

In addition to this being a very busy time of year there's also the fact that Kevin Walek, the current registrar, is retiring and they're looking for a new one. I'm not sure when his last day is in theory it could have happened already and the registrations backlog, if there is one, will be taken up by the new registrar. Anyone need a job?
