I need to look at my pictures of Dynamite and compare. To me, those pictures look just about the same. I just have a question about the std, if that is a shine in the picture, or if thre is actually a little bit of a lighter wash flaring up the std. Not on my computer with the pictures right now to compare.. But will check after my nap (if I remember) ...

We had some of the medium height dark purple, the yellow & brown, a couple very tall light purple ones (one a bit more pink that was very fragrant and one a bit more bluish that was not fragrant), and a white one with dark purple falls with a thin white edge all around. These had been growing in the flowerbeds at out house at our farm 'forever'. My brother's wife was not into flowers so when they took over the farm in the late 70's she dug out all the flowerbeds & planted them to grass Sad . I have never found another of the tall fragrant ones.

The first named one we had was "Blue Sapphire" which we got from Grandma who had been given a clump by Grandpa's boss's wife. A few years later Dad & I placed an order from a catalog for I think 5 varieties and one was called "Heartbreaker" and another was "Babbling Brook". Heartbreaker is the only one of Dad's Irises I have any more. It's special because he was killed in an industrial accident a couple years later.

It's nice when you have a bit of family history connected to a special flower. Every time you see it bloom brings back lots of memories.

I was addicted to roses before the Iris addition.. I always dreamed of having a English Cottage Garden like they show in magazine. Not knowing any better I bought Iris from the big box stores so I don't know any of the real names. I do remember the name River Hawk .
About 6 years ago my friend Anita and I stopped at an Iris field where a man sold un-named Iris for 2.00 each. I think we each bought about 60 unmanned Iris. The next three years each spring we would go back and buy about the same amount. I remember the man telling us about these ladies that would come to buy Iris and they would leave mad because he didn't have named Iris. He called them Iris snobs. Anita and I didn't care about the Iris names we both just wanted beautiful gardens and now you know why I have so many un-named Iris. About 4 years ago I noticed a sign that said "Iris sale" that was not to far from where I live. This lady sold her named Iris for 3.00 each and all of them where named! Anyways I was hooked when I saw most of them in bloom and thought how gorgeous they looked. Then I found ATP. My Iris addiction is alive and well.
I was very little but I do remember my Grandmother having Iris that lined her driveway and hollyhocks by her porch. She had many other flowers in her garden but mostly I remember I loved to play with the seeds on the hollyhocks spreading the seeds in her garden.

Did you make Hollyhock dolls? I taught my daughters but it seems to be a lost art.

There is a video out somewhere, but I don't know how to find it. Step 1: pick a flower & turn upside down.
Step 2: pick a bud ( or just slightly open flower if you wish to be fancy. Make hold in bottom of bud or flower & place a small part of the stem of original flower inside.

You have the head or fancy headdress. We used to make parades with the fancy flower as the queen (or bride if white) & the others (just with bud heads) as attendants.

Arlyn How do you find these things? We never used toothpicks, we left the stem long enough to fit in the 'heads'. Experiment with bigger 'headdresses' than shown. OK you people with hollyhocks, let's see the results.

Lucy....do you ever use google? It is a great source for finding almost anything. I typed in Hollyhock Dolls and saw lots of pictures. I remember my sister and her friends making them many years ago.
