I couldn't even capture an image through the glass and the darkness of the area plus the flash. My camera is not great at close ups like this and the area under the plant was dark.
The plant is on a rusty iron stand and the bees were going in from underneath to a small drain hole. This stand sits right by the patio door (the part that doesn't open) so I sat on the floor and watched. They seemed aggressive which is not the kind of bees I always had in my yard before I moved to this apartment.
Anyway, at one point no bees were there so I went outside to water and slipped a large clay saucer under the Spider plant. Then watered very well again. I like bees but not on my patio with my Grandson. A few came back and couldn't get to the hole and I have not seen any more for the past 4 hours.
I may have caught a hive building in progress but stopped it in time. I posted on Facebook and one friend said she had bees make a hive under a plastic chair of hers.
Thanks for letting me vent and for trying to help me, Margaret!
