plantladylin said:Nice plants Cinta! For some reason, the only way I can keep Rex Begonia's alive is in a terrarium. I've killed so many Prayer Plants (Maranta) over the years but now have two that I purchased a few months ago and they are doing really well ... I think because I'm remembering to keeping the soil moist at all times and keeping the humidity up by having them sit on trays with moist pebbles as well. That Spider plant is interesting ... I've never heard of a short-leaf spider plant and it sure is pretty. Your Codiaeum (Croton) that you got last year sure is doing well, really pretty! I have a large Codiaeum I need to transplant soon ... it's planted behind the house and not getting enough light because it's being crowded out by some other shrubs.

bifftwelve, Welcome! That is a really nice Calathea you have there! I have one on my screened back porch that is struggling to stay alive and another potted Calathea outside in deep shade that seems to thrive in that location!

Planto: That is a pretty Chlorophytum!

These are my two Prayer Plants, the first is the one that stays indoors and the second smaller plant is out on my screened porch.

I bought a prayer plant this spring, and much to my surprise, it bloomed all summer on my light stand. Just noticed this morning it threw up a new bloom spike. They look like tiny orchids.

Janice, my Maranta on the screened porch had a few blooms last week ... they do resemble little orchids:

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong topic. *Blush*

I went to a local Wal-Mart today just to browse and noticed one of those "bonsai" potted 'Ponytail Palms' falling out of the pot. It looked like the glued rocks were removed and the poor thing was floating in what little soil it had left (those darn pots never have drainage holes). I ended up getting $3 off, which made the price $10. A quick trip to the parents' to grab some soil and a pot and here it is!

Thumbs up Very nice Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) and I'm sure it is much happier in it's new container!

I've never understood why nurseries plant things with glued rocks on top like that it just makes no sense to me. When we moved 10 months ago, my niece gave me a Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) that's still in the original pot with those pebbles glued to the top of the soil. I will have to break the pot to get it out because it's so stuck.

Thank You!

I think it's so that the rocks don't spill all over the place during transit, but it's not functional otherwise. Thumbs down I was a wee bit excited to notice all the rocks were gone; I bought a cactus planter one year and it was no fun removing the rocks.

Does your pot have a drainage hole? I am not sure how they expect people to water these things either, glued in and no drainage.

No, the Dracaena braunii pot does not have a drainage hole but many people grow that plant in water. I have a couple and one was originally in water but I potted it up.

Your plants always look fabulous so I doubt you have to worry about it!

I was just curious; I've seen those here with the glued rocks too and it seems like some of the pots have drainage holes and some don't. Which is funny considering they can be grown in water (you would think they'd be more inclined to give a 'Palor Palm' a drainage hole than the 'Lucky Bamboo' Hilarious! ).

I admit, I was a wee bit bad this past last week. In addition to my 'Ponytail Palm' purchase, I made a trip back to a local Lowes to buy a 'Hawaiian Spider Plant,' as those seem quite uncommon here, and I picked up this little fella today. *Blush*

Chlorophytum comosum 'Hawaiian'

Philodendron 'Moonlight' (it is but a baby!). Oh yeah, and a hedgehog pot decoration. I like hedgehogs. Lovey dubby

Ham, Hurray! Congratulations on your new acquisitions! That's a really nice Spider Plant (Chlorophytum viridescens 'Hawaiian') and also Philodendron 'Moonlight'

I had a Philo 'Moonlight' a few years ago but don't know what ever happened to that one; probably gave it to a neighbor when we moved. I bought a Hawaiian Spider last year and love it; seems to love our humidity!

I hadn't purchased a new plant in so long ... until last week when I ordered an orchid from drdawg/Ken's ad on the classified forum. It came with a bud that opened today and it has a light, pleasant fragrance!

Oh wait ... I also ordered from Bromeliad Paradise a couple of weeks ago Green Grin! and got these two:

Cinta, I killed Calthea plants 3 times and then gave up... thanks to this thread I might try again with much higher humidity (my living room in winter is pretty darn dry).

I went a little overboard, I blame it on buying a house. Big Grin

I found a small clump of young 'Parlor Palms,' Juncus 'Spiralis,' Kalanchoe 'Satin Bells,' Haworthia limifolia, and an Albuca. *Blush*

Edit: Sorry, some pictures would be nice eh?

I forgot that I bought this little guy too!: 'Earth Star'

I found out here that our Lowes will throw them away rather than re-shelf them (something about the EPA... Confused ), so that isn't entirely incorrect! Hilarious!

new house, definitely a need for houseplants, or why do we call them HOUSEplants?

Nice finds!
