That sure is an unusual one and interesting as well.

My Vanda is blooming her little head off! I counted 9 blooms with 1 more getting ready to "pop"! Big Grin
Never have I seen a flower that was as difficult as this to catch the 'true' color... Sighing!

Love those flowers, Tara!
It is funny how some colors are just impossible to capture ..they human eye is so much
more sophisticated than the newest digital technology.
I had better luck with some colors on overcast days...other colors I would sit the plant in full sun
with a big shady spot behind and that combo would work and also give you a totally black back
ground .

Tara, I am sure everyone is tired of seeing pictures of this plant/flowers. I think I posted the previous three blooms and if nothing else, this plant blooms the same, time after time. She has started producing mid-stem roots now. I may just divide her (I have never tried to divide my two large Vanda) and hope for the best. I go back and forth with this idea since I neither know whether the top, even rooted, will be viable nor what the bottom would do once cut. This is new territory for me.

I will go out today and take a couple of pictures, not so much to show (again) the flowers but to show the rooting/dividing prospects.

No topping now, Ken! It is too late in the season. Topping should be done no later than July so they can recover and establish new root growth.

Quote
The wise orchidist will have long since finished all of his potting of sympodials and the top working of his vandas, but for the rest of us this is the eleventh hour. Autumn is closer than we think and vandas will need at least three months to settle in to their new baskets or pots before the first chill of October tickles their root tips. Unless you can protect them thoroughly from cold, Vanda top cuttings and keikis should not be made after the end of July. If you do take cuttings remember the "3 root rule." Count down from the crown and make the cutting beneath the third or fourth root. Keep as many leaves as possible on the stump and you will be rewarded with a greater abundance of offshoots. Always slip the sterile knife or shears down between the stem and the leaves and then cut transversely to save as many leaves as possible. Be sure to anchor the cutting firmly in its new lodging. Tie them up and tie them down! There is no time for mistakes in July.
End Quote - Martin Motes, PhD I tip my hat to you.

Here is the V. Sunlight Orange. Both sides are shown plus the full plant. Those hanging roots are now 36" long. The Spanish moss started as a 6" piece and I keep it cut back to 24". The Vanda and moss appear to have a nice symbiotic relationship. Thumbs up Or perhaps they simply tolerate each other. Whistling Hopefully I can grow this plant in the solarium. Both Vanda really crowd my orchid greenhouse.

Love seeing someone using the Spanish Moss that way. Although, it is strange to hear of someone growing Spanish Moss. I use it as a top dressing on pots and in the bottoms of pots to cover the drain hole but mostly I take it to the dump. After our recent storms, we had to get rid of bushels of it. Once it hits the ground chiggers take up residence in it.

Hilarious! Alice, I've been trying to grow more spanish moss for a while now! Hilarious! DH is a bit embarrassed to take walks with me and my 'collecting' bag. Big Grin

I love the fact that my Spanish moss blooms every spring like clockwork. Hurray! The flowers are tiny but pretty. I still amaze people here in Starkville, growing it. I was told by my fellow MGs that it would be impossible to grow. Oh how I like challenges and to prove "experts" wrong. Whistling

I just knew I would get that feed-back, Ursula. Whistling

Perhaps with the solarium, I can grow some specimen plants, but my greenhouses are so cramped with plants during the fall and winter months, large plants like this, and my huge NOID Dendrobium, just take up an inordinate amount of space. I have to admit, I won't remedy that much by dividing this single Vanda. Thus it would have been more like: "Let's see if I can divide a Vanda successfully". You know I love to experiment. Also, the possibility of offshoots intrigues me (these two large Vanda have never produced an offshoot). Regardless, per Melissa's instructions, nothing will happen this year. I will just have to find a suitable space for the large plants. Sighing!

Ken, as far as 'getting tired of seeing an orchid' Hey, that doesn't happen around here. We all have plants that bloom with pretty much the same flowers every year and each time they bloom it's a pleasure.

We see our own flowers every day while they're blooming and don't get tired of them, why would we get tired of seeing your lovely Vanda flowers?

Thanks, Elaine. I did not want to be seen as a "photo-hog". I don't have nearly as many varieties that bloom as many of you do (I don't keep a lot of mine long enough Sighing! ), so many of what I do have bloom are in my (small) personal collection. Heck, I will even sell those if the $$ is right. Whistling
