Harvesting in Autumn: Storing for Winter

By TBGDN
October 11, 2015

My memories of the years when I was a young lad are full of scenes relating to autumn harvests of staple foods from the fields and gardens. It was considered wasteful, even sinful, back then not to plan ahead and prepare for the coming winter months. This activity began in the mid-summer months, but it accelerated rapidly as we moved into late summer and early fall.

Do you still have a root cellar, or do you just use your garage? Some of my earliest memories have been root cellars. Now I am a Ca. city gal, where no one even knows what a root cellar is. Wish I could go back to those days!

Hi Carol,
Yes I dug and constructed it myself several years ago. As a matter of fact, it was completed in 1980. It has
cement block walls, reinforced concrete floors and ventilation shafts. Here are a couple of pictures of me
actually laying the block work! Remember this was a l-o-n-g time ago. I probably would have to hire it done
today. My muscles have changed somewhat.

There was a couple of pictures in an article in my blog from 2013 that has been removed and updated. It never hurts to be prepared.
We also use this as a storm cellar in case of severe weather or other emergencies.

Interesting! No guarantees of no "tornadoes or snow" here; we get a little dab of everything. Goes with the turf I suppose! Sad

Leon, you took me back 30 years! I don't have vegetable garden now other than a couple of tomato plants. But I grew up on a farm where we did that and even a few years after being first married, we stored potatoes in the basement on a wooden framed table.

One of the things that we also did after initially storing the potatoes was to go through them and inspect them to see if there were any that might be rotting. You don't want to find a rotten one with maggots on it! Yuk!

You covered two of my very favorite vetegables, onions and potatoes. Now I want to make a big pot of potato soup!

Vickie,
We love potato soup on a cold winter day. It's even better after shoveling snow! I have to confess I love fried potatoes with broccoli & onions as a stir-fry. It's very hearty on any cold January day!

Oh that looks so good, Leon!

My favorite food of all time is mashed potatoes. Even when I'm sick, that is my go to food.
