I know I should know the name of these two cactuses but I can't remember for the life of me nor can I find them anywhere. The first picture I found one at Lowes but the tag didn't have the name of it it just said cactus. The second picture my dad gave to me he bought it out west somewhere and can't remember the name.

The top one appears to be Euphorbia trigona.

I agree on the first ID. Not sure on the second cactus.

The second one looks like Disocactus flagelliformis (Rat Tail Cactus)

Cinta, that was my thought too, but the thick, upright tails made me think otherwise. If that's what it is, it's a very healthy specimen. Maybe the tails were reaching for more light than it was receiving.

I think @cinta is on the right track with the rat tail cactus.But all the images I've looked at of the rat tail seem to be hanging down were mine is trying to grow up. It gets well over 8 hours of direct sunlight a day. I have also been told it looks like "The Old Man of the Andes". I'm curious to know if anyone who is familiar with that cactus agrees.

My dog-tail cactus (Selenicereus testudo)does the same thing of some of the tails sticking up until they get to a certain length then they drop down. Most of you younger tails are the ones that are sticking up. That is why I thought it might be a cat tail.

The cactus that I have seen that have been said to be "The Old Man of the Andes" were more of a singular stem cactus that is very stiff and does not hang down.

Thanks Cinta! It makes sense that they would grow vertically until they are too heavy or long to stay upright. I appreciate all your help. I believe my orphan cactus my finally have a name!

The second picture maybe shows Oreocereus doelzianus

Plantcollector, I kept thinking that 2nd cactus looked like something that I'd seen before, but couldn't remember the name of it. Then I was going through some older posts of a thread about other plants orchid growers had, in the Orchid forum and saw a picture of a similar plant, which @Ursula said was Hildewintera aureispina, a cristate that she allows to revert to the original form with the hanging stems like yours. So I googled it and came to this link with a plant more like yours and the name I'd been wrecking my brain trying to remember:

I found out that Hildewintera has been renamed Cleistocactus winteri. Here's our database link which lists it's common name Golden Rat Tail Cactus. (@Cinta was definitely in the right ballpark) : Golden Rat Tail (Borzicactus aureispinus) or depending on the bloom color, another possibility: Borzicactus icosagonus subsp. icosagonus

Hello everyone, just catching up with the threads.

It does seem to look like a rat tail cacti as Cinta said. My rat tail does that growing up growth then later on it trails down. The Old Man of the Andes is more hairy, like covered all over with white hair growth.

It would be nice when it makes some blooms later on. Then we can see if it is a rat tail cacti indeed.

I have never seen blooms on it. My dad had it for about a year before he gave it to me. Maybe it will bloom this summer.

In my area, I usually get the blooms in late Spring to early Summer. I have a photo in our ATP database.

Just came home with a noid rat tail. I'll get pics and see what you think.

One I have had a long time looks just like yours. This new one has fatter stems and is a more golden color rather than green. I still haven't had the right light to photograph it. We are getting rare Arizona rain.

We have been getting lots of rains this time around too Karen. Have been peeking at my succulents outdoors from time to time...so far they are holding..thankful for some break in the rain and that overnights are above 40F so not too bad yet. My rat tail cacti is outdoors, so far not showing any undue cold/rain damage.

I can't keep mine outside it has been put up since November under grow lights and heat.

Yes, keep your cacti indoors Hearth, it gets much colder on your side. It took me awhile to see which of my cacti can take our cold/wet winters here..killed some along the way oops!
