Like Trish I pull as I walk and look. Mostly I hand weed, but I also tool weed...especially when it comes to prickly pear cactus!!

Yeah, and the Bull Nettle. *shudder*

Both: I go by numbers, soil and convenience.

If it's just a few in soft soil, I pull them when I happen to be right there.

If they're growing in hard clay, and there's a big enough patch or weeds, it's worth taking a walk to get a hoe or cultivator to scrape them off at the soil line en mass. (Or go deeper with a mattock.)

Maybe once or twice per year, if the whole yard is overgrown, and especially if wild blackerries are taking over, I'll mix a gallon of herbicide.

I believe I do both also. hand weeding and use of tool. I have one that has a hoe on one end and three prongs on reverse, use it all the time. I call it my "Weedwhacker"

Pretty much both. It depends on what I'm weeding whether I weed by hand or with tool. Of course, it also depends IF I weed. By the looks of my gardens most people would probably say I don't weed. LOL

Charleen, I think what you have is a type of matock. When Jack bought one for me I thought it was the dumbest idea he had ever had. It wasn't long before I learned to love it in this black gumbo soil that gets hard as a rock when it's really dry.

Mostly I hand weed since I have so little garden now. I have also mixed a few gallons of herbicide this year and need to use more. The giant foxtail is full of seed heads so I'll spray the foliage and pull off the seed heads to go into a burning barrel.

I have a weed dragon too and really like it for some things. I'm not up to using this year but maybe next year I'll be able to. Or I'll get the smaller version that uses the little propane tanks.

I use my 36" loppers for cutting off tree size stuff like pokeweed, mature sunflower, and some other large stemed weeds as well at the sprouts of several kinds of trees and vines that sprout around here. That way I don't have to squat or bend as much. Then I use Tordon to treat the stump. My hand nippers get lots of use too.

I use my special digging tool that Jack made of for me many years ago to get out deep or large roots that I don't think should be left even if treated. Or for digging out clumps of grasses or multi stemmed weeds.

The right tool for the right job!

My favorite tool is always to wear garden gloves. I like Foxglove Garden Gloves and I like Ethel Gardening Gloves. Sure as heck I'll cut myself, or get a sliver from something if I'm not wearing them.

Often I start with a tool, then drop it for hand pulling. I have done some unintended damage with a tool, so want to be careful around some plants.
