Neal, I have the opposite problem with shasta daisies - I planted a few (white, about 3 ft tall) and they flowered really well. But the following year they had become really invasive. In the third year I gave up and tried to pull them all up, but there are still some here and there. If you like I can send you some seeds this summer - I sent four lots of delphinium seeds to ATP people in the US and I think they all arrived without problem (one hasn't told me he received them, but the other three have). They did seem to take longer than I thought they would (3-4 weeks).
Just say the word...

Jen, if you're dividing anyway and have extras, I'd still love to try some. But don't worry with digging just for me, I think I'll get my daisy fix this year Smiling

Mika, thank you so much for your kind offer! Do you know what variety you grow? How tall does it get?

Neal, I'm not sure about the exact variety, but I think I got it simply as leucanthemum x superbum. I've been browsing around on the internet and have found something saying that shasta daisies are not fertile, in which case what I have isn't what you are looking for! The one here self-seeds rampantly, to the point where I considered it invasive. The height is about 3 feet. Sorry if I've wasted your time... *Blush*

Neal, I'm getting confused here - I have now found websites saying that shasta daisies are sterile and other websites offering shasta daisy seeds. Shall I send you some anyway and you can see if they are what you want?

I believe some varieties are fertile, I'm thinking I've started saved seeds before?... I'm curious now and would indeed like to try some seeds Mika Thumbs up

Hi All,

Glad to see this thread. When do you prune back last years foliage? Or do you? I started Silver Princess, dwarf Shasta from seed last year, and I'm not sure what I should do with them this spring. I didn't realize shasta's were tricky to over winter. I hope mine made it. I didn't provide any addt'l winter protection.

I think my issues have been an anomaly because most folks don't seem to have problems overwintering them. Last fall my clump (that started out in spring as a tiny surviving remnant from what had been a clump the year before) was full of healthy dark green leaves going into winter, and stayed that way well into winter. It was after the worst cold and the snow had melted that I saw the leaves had shriveled. The dead leaves just sloughed off and disappeared and I didn't do any trimming.

Thanks Neil! Mine were green well into winter too, but I just went out to look at them and just like you said the leaves were shriveled and really nothing to prune but a few tugs of dead foliage I pulled off. Last I looked they were fuller and green-ish. AND now I noticed a lot of new growth as well, so I supposed I'm heading in the right direction. Sorry yours aren't doing so well : /

We cut the stems down to the ground in winter, but don't take any other special care apart from sporadic dead-heading in the flowering season.

Thanks, Mika! That seems to be the consensus. Only one of mine flowered last year, their first summer, and I probably should have cut them then as the plant was very tiny and trying to get established, but they were so cute. It was really a blooming machine, as all the other ones were just turning into big green plants. Hopefully it will be alright this year and I didn't set it back, too much.

For years any Shasta daisies would get huge aphids and what seemed to be fire blight here in Aurora Colorado zone 5a. Soil is quite sandy ph 7.5

In my previous home where I had soil of gold I had beautiful Shasta daisies. When we moved to this current home with red clay soil, I can't get daisies to live.

Glad your daisies made it this year Neal. Polymerous, I was surprised to see you mention Ice Star. It is one I bought years ago at a grocery store and I have divided it many times and continue to grow it partly because it does not reseed all over, but does keep coming back. Have you tried dividing yours? Sante is one I loved, but only grew one year for me.

Those are beautiful Susan! Hoping the curse is broken and Shastas will thrive here- so far the 2 I have are looking great.

I saw a miniature form at Lowe's last week with blooms about an inch in diameter- cute little thing! The plant was about 8" tall.
