Harvesting in Autumn: Storing for Winter

By TBGDN

My memories of the years when I was a young lad are full of scenes relating to autumn harvests of staple foods from the fields and gardens. It was considered wasteful, even sinful, back then not to plan ahead and prepare for the coming winter months. This activity began in the mid-summer months, but it accelerated rapidly as we moved into late summer and early fall.

Tell me why people stopped this way of life? Was it because after WW2 such work was considered inferior? Why is it now that the US can't find enough young people to pick the crops? It's silly! I
I spoke to an older woman ( in her 80's about 2 years ago) about why she "hated" home vegetable garden.
Why? They reminded her of the war and being hungry. That it made her feel ashamed for the people who were growing their own food.
That they must be poor. Gosh! I hadn't considered that.

Rose,
You ask two very good questions. I do not have the answers to either. I will say this: We have seen a dramatic culture shift in this country during my lifetime! Personally, I feel the shame lies in failure to work for one's livelihood. Some of the 'richest' people I have known were 'poor' by today's standards. I guess it depends on how someone might define those two terms.

BTW I see you are a new ATP member. Welcome aboard! Smiling
