I have Alien Mist and I have Codicil on my want list ...and I'll have to add a few of the other suggestions to that list as well... Turns out this is another of those dangerous enabler threads! Big Grin

Don't you think that DAVE had this in mind all the while...? To get us addicted to using this website and all that comes with it...like making new friends who share similar interests in gardening? We just have to share our pictures, rhizomes, seeds, plants and of course, our stories.....isn't this fun? nodding

Since I just got Codicil this year, I will wait and see how it grows. If it does well, I will be happy to share it. I have put Alien Mist on my want list. (What a beauty!) Song of Norway looks beautiful as well! Lovey dubby

Bet Twice looks pretty from its photo, but there is only one photo in the database. Is that because it doesn't grow well?

Blue J Iris has quite a few very appealing (to me, anyway, based on the photos) cultivars of light blue iris with deep blue beards. The prices are very appealing too.

Thank you, @Hemlady, for bringing up the topic of blue bearded irises. I am now smitten, based on searching for them!

Carol - some of the older iris are not as well represented in the database. There are lots of factors for that I am sure, but I think one is that older iris are often harder to find for sale. Vendors only have so much room, and to make room for the newer introductions they often have to stop selling some of the older varieties. Since those varieties don't then show up in catalogs and such I think people just forget about buying them. Fortunately there are some vendors, like Blue J, that still carry many older varieties so people like you, who wish to collect some blue bearded iris, have a place to find them. And then hopefully add some more pictures to the database. Smiling

Another place to get older irises is Bluebird Haven Iris Gardens. Mary has over 4000 varieties. That is where I got Codicil. Smiling

Wow! Bluebird Haven does have some beautiful blue-bearded cultivars at very reasonable prices; e.g., Blackbeard:

I just looked in the Green Pages and noticed that Blubird Haven Iris Gardens doesn't have any recommendations yet. Would you be willing to add one and specify that it is a recommended source for irises, @evelyninthegarden? That would be very helpful to gardeners like me who only know the famous sources like Schriner's and who like the older cultivars and their lower prices.

@csandt

Where does one go to get to the green pages?

1. Click on Tools & Apps pull down menu
2. Click on "Green Pages."
3. Scroll down to a box entitled "Find Companies by Name."
4. Click on "B."
5. Click on "Bluebird Haven Iris Garden."
6. Scroll down to the box entitled "Actions."
7. Click on "Edit this entry's details" and then check the box for irises.
8. Click on the choice of either to write a reveiw or just to endorse without a review). If you choose to write a review, there will be a box for that. If you are just endorsing without a review, I think you are done.

Thanks for doing this, @evelyninthegarden!

Done. More info about Mary and her iris garden can be found on Google. There is an excellent article in the Mountain Democrat when you do the Google search.

Wow! I love your review, @evelyninthegarden! Thanks so much for writing it.

I found the wonderful article you mentioned here:
http://www.mtdemocrat.com/pros...

I am so glad you took the time to review this important source of irises!

Mary sounds amazing for many reasons: her huge collection of historic irises, the energy she continues to display in caring for her iris farm, and her determination to identify her iris cultivars accurately, to name a few. I hope she can maintain her business in spite of the challenges of gophers and ground squirrels, not to mention all the problems associated with aging.
