After seeing these online for the last year I finally succumbed and bought some sea urchins and stuck some of my Tillandsia in them .. very easy to do and I love them! I'm going to have to see if I can sweet talk my stepsister who lives in Ft. Lauderdale, into sending me a box full of Tillandsias as they are like weeds down there.

Thanks! I call them Air Jelly's because they look like jellyfish to me.

Really cool idea Anne. A local lady hangs all sorts of shells from her oak tree branches and they all have tiny tillys in them but I don't think she had any sea urchins.

Thanks! As I said, I have been seeing these for about a year now and when I went to the craft store I picked up the urchin shells.
Ken I do know how big the tillandsia can get as my parents in Lauderdale have whole colonies growing on their oak trees.

I'm not surprised .. I've been seeing them on the internet for almost a year now. They really are neat and so easy to make .. you don't need glue or anything like that.

No doubt the Cathcarts started the trend. The woman in our community with the shell/tillys hanging in her trees has had them there for at least 14 years that I know of. She winters in Sarasota and knows the Cathcarts very well. She uses many different types of shells.

Before I got the shells, I was wondering if I would need glue but found that you could tuck a few 'leaves' into the hole and they hold just fine.

I'd probably have to use glue here because the squirrels and birds tend to pull the moss or coco fiber and even leaves out of containers when I use it.

Oh, I forgot that, you are right, the wrens love the moss for nests. But, there is little space in the shells, if it were stuffed in tightly the critters would not see it.

I'm definitely going to see if my stepsister will send me more air plants!
