Okay…so I know virtually nothing about Bonsai. My aims for my adenium trees are to keep them compact, and continue growing them in containers; at the same time, I would like to be able to transform them into somewhat of an artistic, yet natural look.
---
Bonsai [bänˈsī, ˈbänˌsī]

NOUN
An ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size.
The art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed trees or shrubs.

The art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees or shrubs in small shallow pots or trays.
A tree or shrub grown by this method.

Succulent Bonsai: Capturing the Spirit of the Desert
By Susan Amoy | December 1, 2014

Succulent plants are fascinating in their diversity of form. In the wild, they range from towering trees, such as Moringa ovalifolia, to inch-high "living stones," like Lithops karasmontana. Many succulents, such as aloes, sedums, and kalanchoes, have become staples in the American garden and home.

Now there is growing interest in applying bonsai techniques to succulents. Though it may seem like an odd matchup, bonsai practice can contribute much to our knowledge of succulent species, and succulents make interesting and unusual additions to bonsai collections.

Here is a list of succulent plants that can be used for bonsai. It is divided into three levels of difficulty based on the horticultural requirements of the plants. Species recommended for beginners can adapt to a fairly wide range of growing conditions. Plants listed as intermediate and advanced require higher levels of control.

Beginner:
• Adenium obesum (Desert rose)
• Brachychiton species (Australian bottle tree)
• Bursera fagaroides (Elephant tree)
• Cereus peruvianus var. monstruosus
• Chorisia speciosa (Floss silk tree)
• Crassula ovata (Jade plant)
• Erythrina species (Coral tree)
• Euphorbia francoisii
• Euphorbia milii (Crown of thorns)
• Jacaratia corumbenis (Dwarf papaya)
• Jatropha podagrica (Bottle plant)
• Mammillaria bocasana var. monstrosa (Snowball cactus)
• Moringa species
• Pachypodium saundersii (Madagascar palm tree)
• Plectranthus ernestii
• Portulacaria afra (Elephant bush)
----

This is just some food for thought…I’ll be back soon with pictures of my Adenium “bonsai training.”

I would like my tree:
Thumb of 2015-11-17/Rainbow/b11a6d

To eventually have a canopy like this one:
Thumb of 2015-11-17/Rainbow/15a7fd

But first, I have to do this:

Heyyy...what can I say...this is my first time. Sticking tongue out
I happened to have the fancy ribbon on hand so used it instead of buying twine or wire.

Later I will prune the branch tips so that there will be ramifications.
Comments are welcome. I'm all ears!

Two months ago this tree produced this bracket of blooms on one branch tip.

Wow Oceania that is a beautiful looking Adenium! It looks to me like you have the right vision for this beautiful plant.

I don't know much about bonsai though but I know that Rick and Kadie are doing great with their bonsai creations/bonsai training.

I am so sorry for the confusion, Gigi...I am Kadie. I changed my user name to Rainbow. Also, I have included "Oceania" as the region I am located.

Sooo...I have barely begun bonsai treatment for "Gigi," the named tree above. I am tinkering with the idea of shortening the main stem to bring the tiers closer together. What do you think?

I have been trying to name this tree that I grew from seed, but just can't think of one.
Need help for naming, please.

So much for my first endeavor at bonsai training.... Sighing!

One of the branches was pulled down too tightly and it bent a bit causing rot at the bend...so I had to cut it off. I waited a couple of months to see how well the cut stem would branch.

The cut stem branched out very well so I cut off the other stems.

Me thinks my future bonsai training will be limited to keeping overall plant size short and compact, as well as directing growth of branches, by diligent pruning. Sticking tongue out

Hi Willeke,
I might do this again depending on my shaping goal for a tree...I now know where on a stem not to force too much tension. This certainly was a learning experience...learning by trial and error. Big Grin

That still looks really good. I think it will look nice once the other cut off stems will branch out.

Beautiful form on this tree, Kadie. Looks so natural and this is what I like so much about it's style.
While perusing the photo's and scrolling down, thinking of the name you have given this.
Dr. Dawg. In the third photo, I started snickering Rolling on the floor laughing , because the caudex of the tree reminded me of a Dog sitting. Hind end down and front legs up.
Sorry, Ken. Not to make fun of you. It was just in the moment. Nice tree to hold your name.

Rick, I just knew the third photo wouldn't get past you without your noticing something about it! Sighing! The "endowment" was not intentional...there was a long root that needed to be cut out, but I didn't have a good tool at the time that I could get down under to smooth out the "belly." Now that I have a set of bonsai tools I can probably do a better job, including smoothing off the bumps on the legs.
