Some great plants @Rainbow. Pretty colors, and I do like the caudex. I think that is also perhaps the nice thing that no plant is alike. Keeps things exciting.

Thanks Kadie, maybe in spring. Something is wrong with all my adeniums and I can't figure it out. They don't look too good for pictures this time.

Thank you! They are my first from seeds. This time around though, the seeds I planted a couple of days ago are from Rinoa, a reputable vendor. So I am eager to watch these puppies grow. Sticking tongue out

Gigi, they might not be at their best for photo's but maybe we could help figure out what's wrong by looking at your trees. Group hug

Rainbow said:We've been having very nice weather lately...moderate rains every other day and great for my adeniums. Hurray! No tropical depressions or cyclones in sight. <crossed fingers> Many of my trees are once again producing flower buds. They're happy and so am I. Smiling

I had posted this comment only about 3 days ago...well, it's like Booo now. The last 2 days brought more rains Glare
I am not concerned about the greedy caudex and succulent roots...they hoard as much water as they can get and are growing even bigger. It's the flower buds I am worried about...they will drop off with too much precipitation. Crying

KD, I was told a while back to turn my pots on their sides when we get excessive rain. Before I started doing that, I got very few blooms. But, since beginning to turn them over during frequent rainstorms, I've been more successful getting them to bloom. I just thought I'd pass this tip along.

Sounds like a good thing. Would not work for me as a lot of soil would fall out of pots.

Of course I can't do this with those trees I have planted in gritty mix...the mix will definitely spill out. I have only a few in gritty mix that are being bonsai-trained and no flower buds yet on them. So I'm not concerned about them at this time. Big Grin

So glad I found this forum. I am experienced at growing from seed but new to adeniums. I would love to grow a pink or coral variety from seed. Anyone have recommendation for good variety for newbie? I see adenium center website link and will be hurrying over there, but will hold off buying 'til you weigh in with opinions/advice. I have a great place picked out for it on front porch, in my zone it could live out there about 7 months and indoors for winter. Maybe a dwarf variety? Are doubles and triples the way to go or singles? If I am successful I also have friends and family who would give a good home to my extras, great gift idea.

Thanks @Rainbow. Those two I did buy from Adenium ko on eBay.
Welcome @SCButtercup. I think there are a lot of places to buy seeds. I did look at Adenium center, but they only sell seeds at a large quantity, and I do not want 100 seeds of 1 type.
I did buy mainly on eBay. For instance Adenium ko from Taiwan. Has a lot of difference colors and types at a good price.
As for double or single flower. I guess that is just a Mather of taste. I am more for the single, but I do not think that it does make a difference in the caring.

SCButtercup, Adenium Ko is very reliable and a great hybridized of these seeds. Also, Rinoa from Taiwan is great (Orient Adeniums either on FB or eBay). Kukuan of Adeniumcenter has seed in packs of 10 seeds and is good.

If you are wanting a particular color and form of flower. You would be best to purchase a plant with the one you like. Especially, if you have limited space.
Adenium do not come true to seed.
If you have been starting all thos other seeds, you should not have any problem. Just look at the soil mix and some information on these in particular (Adeniums). Much info on this site to assist.
It is definitely a good feeling to start your own and see it's first bloom, whether it is at an age of six months or 2-3yrs.
I purchased some so that I could enjoy a particular bloom which I knew I would get from seed.

@SCButtercup
Hi Judy, nice to see you here. I have viewed your posts in the other forums and really like your variety of flowers; and your article on planning a garden is spot on.

I started growing Adenium obesum trees from seed only last year August. I purchased my first batches of seeds through ebay. At the time I did not know about Ko, Rinoa, Adeniumcenter and other known sellers. I just went with mixed seeds from random sellers at the less expensive prices. Whistling

The flowers in the pictures were beautiful: reds, whites, pinks, yellows, singles, doubles, triples... Well, I did get lots of pinks, a red, a fuchsia, a couple of whites, but no yellows so far. And no doubles or triples. Still, I was/am happy...it's exciting to watch the first flower buds developing, not knowing what color or shape they will be. Here are pics of some of my first flowers. http://garden.org/thread/view_...
Desert Rose (Adenium obesum 'Caprice')

I just recently planted Rinoa's A. obesum seeds and am eager to watch them grow and blossom. I also have ventured into growing A. arabicum and A. somalense.

There are about 10 or 11 species and subspecies of Adeniums. The most popular, of course, is Adenium obesum. This publication talks about the other subspecies as well.

Happy gardening, Judy!
