Digging, Dividing & Storing Dahlia Tubers

In the colder climate zones, dahlias have to be dug up in the fall and stored for the winter. I have been digging and storing tubers for many years. I have tried many different methods. Here is what works best for me.

i coul not avoide digging my spring sown dahlias because i did not believe they developed tubers.i read all the explanations i culd but my tubers are all connected by a short "branch" to central "trunk" i am afraid to seperate the 10 tubers.
is a bud like a small pinsize growth on the surface or is it like a small stem coming out of the tuber upwards?
what could happen if after storing i will put the whole bunch back into the soil but with alot of growing space?

there is a photo in the article showing a bud...

and, yes, I would store the entire tuber clump and plant the entire clump next year.

good luck.
