But it is mine!!!...is it safe to plant them in the ground when we are still expecting freezing temps. or what should I do with them?

Keep them as cool as possible, however, if it is only an occasional night frost that might happen, it is OK to plant them (as long as the ground is not solidly frozen) as they are in the ground and thus well protected.
