Astrantia is an understated flowering plant but is one of the longest blooming plants there is in my garden. It is not only trouble free but has the desirable effect of repelling slugs. The small delicate pincushion like flowers are produced in profusion all season long. The foliage is clean and clear and attractive at all times. It is well behaved and hardy. It would be a wonderful addition to any shade garden. Pictured below are Star of Billion, Vanilla Gorilla, Abbey Road and Lars varieties.

Greater Masterwort (Astrantia major)

I agree Astrantias are a great addition to the shady garden. They are a beautiful background plant and I love how they intermingle with other plants, like your Star of Billion echoing the Hosta colours. That is a beautiful picture Jeanie! Florists love Astrantia as well because the flowering bracts are so long lasting in arrangements. They will self seed themselves as well, tucking themselves into little gaps in the soil. They are easy to remove and pass on to gardening friends if they are not wanted.

For years I've been intrigued by Astrantia, now I'm convinced I need to try some this year!

I agree Jeanie and Debbie. They bloom such a long time and although the flowers aren't large in themselves, the whole plant blooming is a lovely addition to the garden. I especially like your Abbey Road Jeanie.
