@BetNC Oh, Bet I'm sorry! I was tired and meded up when I put on my last post. I guess you know all about the meds now. Ouch!!! This had better be the best tomato jungle yet. Are you using a wheelchair, walker or cane now. I'm thankful the fall didn't damage the work that had already been done on your back.

That's a good cover story, but confess! What were you really doing when you got hurt? Did some fiendish plan to take down the apartment managers draconian rules go haywire?

@MISSINGROSIE That is a great link. Could be very handy indeed!

Kay created a three sisters planting today just for looks and fun. No Creek or Cherokee would recognize it as their influence. That lady is determined to grow organic corn. No fish was sacrificed for her project, but a lot of cows did what cows do best to make it possible and there is fish emulsions from the nursery to make sure. 'Peaches & Cream' corn, pole beans, yellow crooked neck squash and a mammoth sunflower in the center of it all and it's in a container. Admittedly, a very large container, but a container. Kay is determined to have organic corn at it's ultimate sweetness. She claims that means stalk to steamer in minutes. It's all for that one taste of primo corn!

I can't tease her much about the impracticality. I bought a Empress Wu hosta knowing full well that this is a marginal climate for hostas and I think the Empress is the biggest hosta there is. . I'll need to get out the slug and snail bait and any voodoo charms I can come across to make this work. I snagged some of Kay's organic corn soil mix for the Empress. I want her to have the best.

Well clearly.....with that corn soil mix... I tip my hat to you. .it will be the sweetest hosta. if it fails just get it to the steamer in minutes!!

@SeaCanepain I'm house-bound for awhile (make that laying on a heating pad! Hilarious! ). I've decided it's not advisable yet to use my manual ATV to survey my gardens - for now, its all about spyglass gardening! Thumbs up And as for what I was doing. . . well, like the song goes: that's my story and I'm s-s-stickin' to it!!! Whistling Angel

steamer?? Even that loses some nutrition and taste, I believe. To REALLY get that fresh taste, I use my microwave! Shuck that ear, setting aside several complete layers of husk/leaves. . . wash the ear under cold water, removing all silk and bad spots. . .cut off both ends to ready the ear for those short eating handles. . . take 2-3 of the inner leaves and tie them together, making a long "string" (make 2-3 of these "strings"). . . completely wrap the ear with the reserved overlapping layers of husk/leaves. . . use the "strings" to tie the bundle together. . . microwave on high (1100 watt oven) for 1-2 minutes (exact time depends on YOUR oven and personal taste preferences). . . BE CAREFUL when removing!!! IT WILL BE STEAMING HOT!!! Now unwrap that bundle, insert those little handles and do whatever you do (the ear need almost nothing to be able to enjoy th3e fresh taste) and ENJOY!!!

Even supermarket corn tastes almost fresh thius way. nodding nodding

T-t-that's all folks! I think I can hear my heating pad acalling. .

Hi @carrielamont . The Gardening.org forums are set up by categories. You found this under the "Sandbox" Forum where everything else BUT gardening goes and yet often threads have a lot to do with gardening. But yes, this is a thread about physically challenged gardener's. Or in my case, about my husband who is physically challenged. Looking forward to your posts! Welcome! Welcome!

Welcome!

You will find that threads in the ATP/ Garden.org "sandbox" meander just like the chat threads you are used to on other sites. After all the sandbox is a fun place to play and visit.

BUT the non sandbox threads that pertain to gardening topics do stay on topic and if they get off, they will get moved to the sandbox..at least that is how I understand it..( please everyone correct me if I am wrong ) ...there are very serious garderners here. Some have started their own threads to show what is blooming in their garden ...and you may see a lot of photos without a lot of description...there are other threads discussion groups and data bases and blogs that are excellent education tools. And of course if you do run run into a members thread that is mostly photos to show what is blooming you can always inquire about the plant.

Looking forward to seeing your blooms.
Welcome!

Carrie, if you want me to poke Jim for teasing you, just let me know. He has been a Gbooger bear" lately. That is what a nurse at the pain management center christened him anyway and it sounds about right to me. It's always good to see you online whatever the site.

Deb, I picked up the package this morning. Everything looked beautiful. It's all in the ground. My 'Lizard's Tail' doesn't look as lonely in the container with all his new buddies. Thank you very much!

The daylily 'Bold Move' and 'Spacecoast Seashell' bloomed today in the daylily bed. Another easy, breezy plant, lavender hyssop, is blooming at the moment. All the VIPs (visually impaired person) appreciate it for the scent. I'm not a fan of anise or licorice as a flavoring, but even I like the aroma. The scent is mainly in the foliage so the fuzzy lavender spikes are a bonus for we LDPs (light dependent person(s)--a.k.a.: the sighted. Hilarious!

I love rainy days! They give me a chance to rest and catch up with everyone online.
Thanks, @BetNC. I will try the microwave technique for the corn. I like the corn available at the local farmer's market and what my favorite grocery store carries, but I keep hearing what a difference freshness makes because corn starts losing sweetness as soon as it is picked. Inquiring minds want to know.
The soil in the mega-container/raised bed is more than half mushroom compost. If I don't get corn under those circumstances I give up. Corn is a heavy feeder and our native soil is naturally poor. Its growth was stunted in past years. This year I could end up with 9' stalks that produce no corn because of too much nitrogen, but the plants look good thus far.
Jim teases me that the reason I put all the herbs near the door is so I can sniff my way home if I get lost.
I actually grow the mints in the borders near the door because there is concrete on both sides and a concrete bottom to the bed. I love peppermint but it is an escape artist with the skills of Houdini. The scent of the herbs on entering and exiting is a great bonus and having the herbs close to the kitchen makes life easier for me when Nadi inevitably sends me out for something she forgot to gather before she started cooking.
Most herbs have a place among the 'easiest plants to grow with the biggest pay off for the work involved. That's the case in our part of the world anyway. Lean sandy soil is what we have the most of which means the herbs of Mediterranean origin feel right at home. In fact, I've always been told those herbs produce less of the desirable oils if the conditions they grow in are too rich. I know Bets grows the flower I would consider to have the most bang for the buck. If we translate "buck" as the work involved to get the best performance. That is...

*Marigolds: I never expected to see the pansies and marigolds growing together. Our heat has usually melted the violas and pansies by the time the marigolds bloom. The African marigolds have been re-seeding themselves in this bed for years. We end up with different kinds even when I plant only one type in Spring.
*Jim made sure I find my way home when I night garden to avoid the heat. Between the smell of the herb garden, my wind chimes and Jim's lighthouse, finding my way home is not a problem. I can still see light, especially the moving, flashing light this produces. Some might consider this overkill, but it beats the walkie-talkie he was considering having me carry.

Well, our entrance has a nautical theme. Maybe, I should have gotten the fog horn instead?
'Empress Wu' has new leaves already. Must be that magic corn soil.
