Rose Of Sharon: What's in a Name, Anyway

By Sharon
August 30, 2015

A rose is a rose unless it's a Rose of Sharon, and then it's a hibiscus. Some say it's the name of a crocus and others swear it's the name of a tulip and then there's some confusion with the lily of the valley. Poor plant, most likely it lives in a state of constant identity crisis, never knowing on which side of the garden it should grow.

I don't know of any Rose of Sharon that are double that set seeds. I have single petaled seeds in a mix of pink white and maroon colors.

I don't have any doubles either but there's this one in the database:

Then I found this: http://www.monrovia.com/plant-...

And of course if you just Google Images and ask for Hibiscus syriacus doubles, you'll get this:

I do own doubles, but they are sterile. You'll only get seed from single petaled rose of Sharon.

Sharon would you like some seeds for free? They are from 40 year old plants and crossbred with one another so there are sure to be natural variations.

I have three nice sized ROS trees, also from old plants but sure, Keith, I love getting a few seeds from old plants especially those from a different climate. Thank you for the offer. I'll send you a Tmail with my address and also talk with you about the few seeds I have left from different plants that you might like.

The seeds should do well for both of us since our zones are the same but the soil differences can sometimes make changes in blooms.

Interesting point about the soil affecting blooms! We'll have to compare!

It's a little like hydrangeas, they can be pink or blue or white, depending on the soil.

For my regular white ROS, the seeds came from my great grandmother's yard and they had only ever bloomed white with the maroon center. The second year I had them, there was a pink bloom or two on the tree along with the white. The only difference I could think of, and all that others ever told me, is the soil difference might play a part in it. Now, after many years, it has many shades of pink and the white is still there too.

I haven't researched it to any great length, I just enjoy whatever it gives me, so I really don't know.
