Growing Adenium Plants

By drdawg

Although the Adenium ("Desert Rose") has all the looks of a succulent, with a water-reservoir trunk and root form, it is not grown the same way as a typical succulent.

Hi Ken,

Where do you get the seeds for these?

Can they grow from cuttings?

I was told at one of the plant sales here that if you want to get really interesting caudex-forms,... periodically (I think like once or twice a year) you 'wiggle' the plant upward an inch or two, then push the potting medium downward to re-pack it, leaving some of the upper root parts and the lower part of the caudex exposed where it will 'harden' and start creating interesting forms. (Haven't tried it, but the grower who told me how to do it had a bunch with very unique looking caudex's.

Patty, @Ursula donated those seeds. These seedlings are my first go 'round growing adeniums. Needless to say, I would be the last person to ask about rooting cuttings or establishing large/unusual caudices. My only experience is in growing from seed and then potting and up-potting those seedlings. There are some folks who know what they are talking about when it comes to growing/propagating adeniums. Go to the "Adeniums" forum and you'll see lots of informative comments there.
