That's certainly a possibility! Did you ever see a PBS Nature documentary "What Plants Talk About"? It showed how plants have a very elaborate chemical/pheromone system and can actually communicate with their neighbors and recognize and nurture their own offspring. Even more astonishing, when being attacked by bugs can send out a pheromone SOS to attract predators of the bugs that are attacking them! I am sure , much like our own immune system (red blood cells and such) , much of the plant's "behavior" is done at a cellular level , individual parts hardwired to help protect and propagate the whole.
