Good to know about the pbf. The older ones need such a help with ID.

I had to run out and check for PBF.

The issue is that at certain times during the year, the PBF can be very hard to see and at other times is very obvious (this is with Wabash). This may be true of other plants; but I am only making this comment towards Wabash!

Exactly right, Greg. So you can be sure that you have one in the springtime -- and then change your mind in the fall. Shrug!

Well, mine has PBF on the lower part of the leaves. I have always thought it was Wabash and when I find out I could possible have something else I always think.... not again.

There are several other irises with this same color pattern....from the same time frame, ....and with the same 'parentage', so, THAT can muddy up the water a little more! Especially since the have / have not PBF issue isn't known on a few of them. That said, Wabash, and Bright Hour are the two most common, with Amigo being a close third.

TB irises grew in my neighbor's backyard when I was a child. My husband'[s grandmother grew the early iris aka SDBs from post WW II on. So he grew them in our garden & away we went.

There were pretty purple irises growing next to the house where I lived as a young child. I loved them. Smiling I started growing irises myself after a co-worker gave me some noids. (a yellow noid, a purple noid, and noids that looked like Wabash, Batik, and True Charm). I lived in an apartment and grew them in a little strip of dirt between the sidewalk and the fence. I don't think they got much sun, but still managed to bloom. Smiling

People will think i'm nuts but what got me started with irises were some dwarf Dutch iris bulbs i picked up at a local nursery. Though small the deep purple with yellow complex flower was so eye catching i was hooked. The fact that the only competition was snowdrops and some crocus in March made me want to plant more. The great part is they fit anywhere. It makes me look forward to fall so i can get more. I've expanded to Ensada, dwarf and regular bearded and SIB's but still love those Dutch.

I think most of us on this forum are a little nutty when it comes to iris. Smiling

You mean those little rock garden iris? I love those! I got my MIL hooked. She could take or leave TB, but those little things really make her smile. Me too! We have to be crafty luring people in to iris appreciation -- by hook or dwarf
