scary in Round-Up Tip

If you have a plant that is surrounded by other plants and you want to use Round-Up on it, use 5 or 6 garden stakes around the plant and a large trash/garbage bag with the bottom cut open. Place it around the stakes and plant; carefully tuck all foliage inside, pull the bag to the top and secure it by poking a hole with the stake through the top of the bag. You can then safely spray inside the bag. Wait until it is dry before removing the bag and stakes.

I have been unable to bring myself to spray Roundup around my good plants. Only the driveway and the paths get sprayed. I'd rather pull!

Would it work as well to skip the stakes, pull the bag over the plant to be sprayed (or the one to be prtected), then tie a string or rope around the bottom of the bag, cinching it tight around the stem of the plant?

Just because it ISN'T complicated doesn't mean I can't MAKE it complicated!

The reason I didn't pull or dig the plant is because it was a ditch lily, previous experience has taught me that the roots of these plants go very deep and if you miss just a tiny piece of root it will grow into another plant, I treated another ditch lily in another bed and it has not grown back.

It depends on the plant as to whether you could skip the stakes, it gives the trash bag stability so that it doesn't collapse.

Susie I do not use Round-Up very often, but this bully of a plant had to go, it was given to me and I had no idea how it could spread.

Ahh!

I have an azealia that hasn't recovered a year later from some wind-drifted herbicide. Some awfull weeds invaded from the neighbor's yard. Pulling them just encourages them.

I have some ditch lilies stuck between big rocks under ground and I can't pull them... or dig em... sooo glad you posted this.. will be doing that in the future!!.. never even dawned on me that round up would work on them

Sorry about your azalea Rick, I am very careful about wind drift when I use a herbicide, which isn't very often.

Susie I think if you have an area where you don't care about their spreading ditch lilies are pretty.

Lynn I'm surprised that Round-Up won't kill your ivy, that must be a pretty tough plant!!

That's too bad Lynn, maybe you could try and lightly scrape some of the leaves with an abrasive and apply the Round-Up and repeat several times, it may take up enough of the herbicide to kill it.

I don't know if I have enough lifetime left to do that Margaret. The neighbor next door lets his ivy hedge go to bloom and then seed. The birds have taken it every where. It is even coming up seedlings in some of my pots.
