'Fire Island' emerges nearly fluorescent yellow with red leaf petioles. The yellow gradually fades in the sun or becomes chartreuse/green depending on light levels. It's a small-medium sized hosta that is a hybrid of longipes hypoglauca x ‘Crested Surf’ (B. Brincka 1998). It forms a loose mound and grows fairly quickly. Like many of my hostas, it was badly attacked my slugs last year which got the upper hand when I was away for two weeks in July. I've had mine since spring 2007. Please feel free to add you pictures of this hosta.

Afternoon Ann! I have both Fire Island and Paradise Island 'littered' around the yard in places where I need pops of color. This one in paired with Blue Mouse Ears and has been in the jar for two years now. I actually keep quite a few hosta in planters so that I can easily move them around to change things up a bit.

I also have 'Paradise Island' and it was about 2' north of FI. It did well one year and ever since then it has been decimated by slugs. Last year I potted it and it did much better, but still not even close to the kind of growth I've had on FI.

Ann,

We use a pine bark mulch around all of our hosta that are in the ground. The rough surfaces really help keep the slug problem to a minimum.

I have it in many places too. I just don't quite understand why the hosta in one location did so poorly compared to one that was two feet away.

Ahhhhh, Mother Nature at her finest! Always keep 'em guessing.

I have the same issue with a number of cultivars. But, I figure it's green and basically growing, so leave it alone.

I was asked for a division of this; so I divided it and the plant sulked for the rest of the season. I'm hoping it recovers this year.

Welcome! @KarinlackCat !

Fire island is one of my many favorites. We use it, Paradise Island and Dancing Queen the 'dark' areas. They're like little lanterns.

If you're not familiar with Paradise Island, it's a sport of Fire island. The leaves have the same bright color, but with irregular, thin green margins.

Even better is 'Island Breeze' which is a sport of 'Paradise Island'. I've found much better growth on it than on the other two.
