You will likely need to start your tomatoes inside, then perhaps surround them with one of those wall-o-water insulators, and also protect them from early frosts. Set them out in a protected area with solid south and west exposure to maximize the sunlight. Try to find the shortest season plants, likely hybrid cherries would be your best bet. I get my seed from Territorial Seed which is specific to the Pacific Northwest - you may be able to find a seed company that focuses on high mountain. Adaptive Seeds is another western company that might be helpful. Good luck - a fresh tomato is worth all the trouble!

And welcome to NGA, hope you enjoy the site.

Welcome! I also have a very short growing season although it is somewhat made up for by having very long days. I have to admit I have never gotten tomatoes to produce either. But I try every year. This year we are having a very hot sunny beginning to summer. I bought starts and let them grow in my 'garage greenhouse' until they were about12" tall and then put them in my raised bed with a poly cover on it. That was around the third week in May. Kept the cover on which allows filtered light to make hardening them off easier, then left it off during the day but back at night. Now I leave it off all the time. If the weather stays like it is I may just get harvestable tomatoes. They are a brand called Siberian which are listed as 'outdoor' tomatoes up here. If the weather turns cool I will put the cover back. I also have two peppers in their, another tough one for me. I also set up a drip system this year to get more consistent and deeper watering so we will see.

TY all ! I am in 5A. I grew my seedlings to bout 1 ft. made sure stalks are hearty enough to withstand.
I have them on back deck ( I live in the forrest so its the only place that gets enough sun all day.)
They are looking pretty good so far. With any luck HA! The winds have been big this year (very unusual!)

I have plant tents over all the garden. All I can do now is HOPE !!! LOL

Thank You!
