Hi Ginger! Your bloom looks like it has 2 clear petals (vs. just 1 very small one) and lacks the brown dots in the middle of the yellow things, so I don't think it is C. communis. I'm leaning toward C. erecta.

I think virginica has 3 same-size petals. I didn't see it in person like you did but in the pic it looks like the lower is a smaller petal than the other two, that they usually refer to as clear, but agree yours & many other pics show a blue hue to the clear petal(s.) Opaque might be a better term for those different petals on some of the species.

This pic still stands out as an anomaly in the C. communis entry.

It reminds me of C. virginica but so many look alike. Whichever it is, it sure is pretty! Maybe it should be moved to the general Commelina database entry? Dayflower (Commelina)
